Dwelling on a High Chair Purchase
by Amazon Baby Babble
My son just turned 5 months old, and while he hasn't achieved some of the physical milestones that some of his friends have (rolling over, pushing up on his hands from the tummy position), he's a fantastic sitter. After working on his abs for a few weeks, he can now sit very comfortably pretty much on his own (though I have him grasp my fingers for support and peace of mind). And this--along with recent rice cereal tastings--got my wife and I thinking about making the leap to the next phase (of many next phases): sitting at the table during meals.
Most sources say that a high chair can be introduced around 6 months, or when your baby can lean forward by herself. Doing a scan of some of the review sites, Consumer Reports gave the Graco Contempo its top rating back in April (ratings available via subscription, with free overview), while the Consumer Search site (which aggregates a variety of reviews) crowns the Fisher Price Healthy Care with the gold.
But as my architect wife is finicky about design (which she's passed onto me through years of reading her Dwell subscription), we weren't going to be satisfied with a plastic behemoth. And thus, we are ordering the Stokke Tripp Trapp (which actually garnered the lowest rating in the Consumer Reports survey, though Stokke notes that the German Test magazine recently won top high chair for the third year in a row).
More than just an example of suitably Scandinavia design (my name means wicker chair in Ikea-n), it has an adjustable seat and footrest that will grow with our child. And it will allow him to eat with us right at the table, rather have the separation of a tray. And since our lil' guy is still young, there are optional cushions and a baby rail that we'll be adding. After we've lived with it for awhile, I'll write an update on our experience.
If you've got an older toddler and you'd like to do away with the high chair, the Kaboost seems to be a good (and less expensive) alternative. It's essentially a flexible base that fits just about any standard four-legged chair, providing a bit of a riser so that your child can more comfortably access the tabletop.
