A Guide To Understanding The Importance Of Academi
The History Of Graduation Gowns
The use of academic gowns has started back in the 12th and 13th centuries. These were the times when the universities in the academic world were just taking shape. During those times, all students and teachers wore a clerical gown as part of their life in the academe simply because most university classrooms have no central heating system. After all, classes in the old days were conducted in churches and other buildings nearby.
In 1321, the University of Coimbra released a mandate that all Licentiates, Bachelors and Doctors o wear gowns. Then, in 14th century, two other colleges in England decreed of the use of long gown and no other excess apparel. It was in the late 15th century that both Cambridge and Oxford Universities decreed a definite academic dress of the scholars together with the minor details of the apparel.
Gardner Cotrell Leonard from Albany was the reason behind the standardized academic gowns in the academe until today. In 19th century, he designed the graduation gowns of his class in Williams College. His article about the design of the gown had made him be invited by the Intercollegiate Commission to lead the standardization of the academic attire. In 1895, the cut, style and material of the gowns were regulated together with assigning different colors to different disciplines in the academic world.
The Perfect Academic Gown For You
Now, the question is not anymore how and when the graduation academic apparels had started. Now that you will be wearing one, the question is which one will be the perfect attire for you. Don’t worry, this situation that you are in today is not a tough job at all.
The first thing you must keep in mind is your college’s graduation rules. Take note that different schools have different standards when it comes to graduation gowns and caps. Hence, it is best for you to ask your college for the guidelines and rules for the graduation.
Moreover, keep in mind that the ceremony will be done most likely during May or June. Therefore, light clothing will be a great choice. This is true for your undergarments for the gown. So make sure they are light and airy such as cotton or linen.
Also, when your gown is yellow or white, don’t make the mistake of wearing a dress that has bright colors and prints. A light colored undergarment will be a good option as its outline will not be visible under a white or yellow robe. For men, a tie, light colored shirt and khaki are the best options.
It is of great importance that you show up on your graduation wearing the right apparel. The history of the academic gowns must be enough for you to observe and respect the importance of these apparels on this very important day.
