Decisions, Decisions

In the world of printing, there are basically two kinds of printers-- laser printers and inkjet printers. In fact, there are more, such as impact printers, but most consumers in the home choose between laser printers and inkjet printers. If you are in the market for a printer, then this piece is for you. The following is a explanation of the pro's and con's of both types of printers.

Laser Printers: Good

The main advantage is that a print job from a laser printer is quicker and more precise than a print job from an inkjet. Here, you are really getting what you pay for. A laser printer is just a better quality printer. Therefore, it is more expensive than an inkjet printer so I will refer to this again in the "disadvantages" section about laser printers. But while the price of the laser printer machine is more expensive, toner is cheaper and lasts a long time. I know this article is geared to househould consumers, but many offices prefer laser printers over inkjets for the reason just mentioned. As seems to always be the case with technology, prices of laser printers have dropped in recent years, making laser printers affordable in the home.

Inkjet Printers: Good

Inkjets are not only cheaper than laser printers but they are pretty reliable as well. I actually was just recently in the market for a cheap printer. If you are just strictly looking for a cheap printer, then get in inkjet. Nowadays, inkjets deliver good bang for their buck.

Laser printers are sometimes large. So, if your office space is limited, it may be difficult to get a laser printer. Laser printers can also be high-priced. Most cost several hundred dollars.

Inkjet Printers: Bad

Sometimes, inkjets do not last as long as their counterparts, the lasers. Though as we have learned, inkjets are cheaper than lasers. Also, sometimes their print jobs do not come out as clearly and efficiently as the lasers. What I mean is sometimes there are ink spots or the ink can run a little bit. Another disadvantage is that while the printer itself is cheaper than its laser counterpart, the ink cartidges can be expensive. I also wanted to point out that inkjet print cartridges have to be changed a lot more often than toner in laser printers.

So it's kind of like having a cheap razor with expensive blades, or an explensive razor with more durable blades, if that makes sense.

 El conclusion

If price is your only concern, go with the inkjet. But do remember that the cost of changing the print cartridges does add up. If you don't have a lot of space in your home, also go for the inkjet becaase it takes up less space than a laser printer. An inkjet is good for basic, "get-the-job-done" printing.

In an office setting, it is definitely recommended to use a laser printer. Another reason to purchase a laser printer over an inkjet printer is if you will be doing a lot of printing In this case, the laser printer is definitely a better value, because of its workhorse capabilities. If print (final product) quality is your chief concern, choose the laser printer.

There you have it. Thanks for reading my opinion on the pros and cons of laser and inkjet printers.
