The American Society of Phlebotomy Technicians (ASPT) prides itself on being the primary source of certification and education for phlebotomy professionals seeking the highest standards of practice. By supporting its members with a list of available resources, the ASPT offers phlebotomists and health care professionals a chance to practice their craft with the utmost excellence, knowledge and compassion in their field. ASPT continuing education programs also reach out to accredited institutions to offer its members superior program development working hand-in-hand with its standards of practice.
Phlebotomy Certification Guidelines
To become certified by the ASPT you must adhere to a specific set of requirements to be able to sit for the phlebotomy certification test. The following is a description of these guidelines:
One full year as a part-time phlebotomist or six months as a full time phlebotomist
To surpass the above requirements, a letter on appropriate letterhead stating that you have worked part-time extracting blood specimens on a regular basis.
In lieu of such a letter, a signed application stating your appropriate experience from your supervisor is acceptable.
Passed completion of an accredited phlebotomy training program.
100 successful, documented venipunctures.
5 documented skin punctures.
ASPT membership in good standing.
Available Training Programs
The ASPT covers a variety of training programs that will enhance your certification level potential as well as employment desirability. There are seven programs available:
Phlebotomy
Electrocardiography
Paramedical Insurance
Nursing Cross Training
Medical Assistant Cross Training
Point of Care Module Training
Patient Care Technician
Included subjects covered are professionalism, legal topic discussions, round table discussions, universal precautions, difficult draw solutions, order of venipuncture draws, problem solving, appropriate communication skills and specimen rejections.
