People with Parkinson’s disease, the second most common neurodegenerative disorder after Alzheimer's disease and affecting 1.5 million Americans or approximately 1% of the population over 50, are looking for the best the medical system has to offer.

The May issue of The Burnham Review looks at the research which supports the use of Complementary and Alternative Medicine. There is research in peer reviewed, medical journals that indicated that people with Parkinson’s Disease should at least consider an Integrative Medicine approach that includes, Osteopathic Manual Therapy, CranioSacral Therapy, Chiropractic care, Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Integrative Manual Therapy, Qigong, Acupuncture, Acupressure, Alexander Technique, and Music Therapy.

Trigeminal neuralgia can be an extremely painful condition affecting the 5th cranial nerve, the side of the face and chewing and swallowing. There is encouraging research indicating that manual therapy, homeopathy and a gluten-free diet can decrease the facial pain. Yet, how many people with excruciating pain are being told about these options?

It is common for people with joints pain, back pain, shoulder, hip or knee dysfunction, pulled muscles, torn ligaments to consult a manual therapist but how many think of complementary medicine when the pain and dysfunction they feel is due to osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis. The June issue of The Burnham Review lists 12 different kinds of complementary medicine, including magnets and massage therapy, which the medical research indicates can be beneficial for people with osteoarthritis of the knee or hip.

Covered in the December, 2006 issue of The Burnham Review is the research that indicates that manual therapy can benefit people going through chemotherapy. Hands-on therapies can help decrease nausea, increase energy levels, and decrease the irritation of the skin and lining of the digestive system caused by the chemotherapy. There are a number of complementary and alternative medicines approaches which make the process of chemotherapy, whether it is for breast cancer or for leukemia, more successful and well tolerated.
