The cellular industry invested over $13.7 billion (USD) in spectrum auctions. The cellular companies will need to recoup the investment, probably through fees charged to the public. Today's cost for a cellular service with an average data communications service of 130 Kbps is about $80 a month. To be competitive with the advances in WiMAX and Wi-Fi, the fee for 4G services will need to be lower than the cellular companies expect. A better strategy for 4G operators would be to offer lower speeds with more capacity to handle more users as a bargain thereby fully loading the networks with subscribers. Usage based offerings with specific services, offering niche services at moderate speeds, may turn out to be the most effective and profitable method to roll-out 4G.

This publication is the third in a series of research from Mind Commerce that address the market place, the business drivers and the competition of the three major broadband wireless technologies with part one, Broadband Wireless: WiMax Industry, part two Broadband Wireless WiFi Industry and this report covering 4G cellular.

Key Findings

The 4G services will need more MVNE's to support the OSS/BSS infrastructure.
Revenues will reach $2.5B, $9.1B for cellular data and small business DSL respectively by 2011
Small business spending on Internet access will grow to $8.2 billion by 2009, up from $4.4 billion in 2005, largely due to adoption of DSL and higher bandwidth services.
Spending on wireless data services will outpace all other categories in the SOHO segment, growing to nearly $2.2 billion in 2009, up from $0.47 billion in 2005

Moving from 3G to 4G should simplify making applications available to mobile users because of the faster data rates. This will make the middleware used to adapt applications for the slower speed of wireless systems obsolete. The availability of a complete IP based service with the security of a VPN (Virtual Private Network) to the mobile end-user will be a major benefit. The access to the network will be continuous.

The face off between 4G verses Wi-Fi verses WiMAX will be a globally adopted network of shared applications, resources and standards meeting a minimum delivery requirement of VoFi, broadband, and multimedia services to all 4G enabled end-users.

The best in performance will be the solution of choice. If WiMAX can gain a loyal customer base with revenue projections, the cellular companies will merger quickly with them.

Mobile operators have managed to maintain their legacy message delivery platforms, despite the advances that have been made in platform capabilities over recent years. Traditional “Store and Forward” SMS delivery platforms have managed to retain their place, chiefly because of their cost. Historically, operating costs of these platforms are high and could be easily replaced. This report is primarily targeted at mobile operators in order to provide some strategic views and observations on the possibilities available to them to interoperate between the existing Short Message Service and Instant Messaging.

Traditional telecoms messaging services will remain a dominant factor in mobile network development, but will be integrated further into new services that will emerge by the continued convergence opportunities of services. Advanced mobile IM functionality will make use of many of the features that are readily available on mobile networks to maximize service capabilities and provide the same functionality as exists for IM now.

Operators and vendors will find this publication useful as they make decisions about messaging technology direction, messaging functionality, and extension of instant messaging into mobile networks with a mind towards evolving existing messaging solutions to more advanced capabilities.

Mobile search provides consumers anytime, anywhere access to information via the mobile Web. Mobile search applications need to have speed and ease-of-use, feature simple query entry, quick interface navigation and precise use of limited mobile device screen space. Awareness of mobile local search continues to grow with consumers, creating new opportunities for brands and vendors to exploit the power of the mobile channel. Written by Kris Kolodziej an industry veteran in the location technology field for almost a decade, this report evaluates location-based search business opportunities and vendors that exploit them, and provides an analysis of the current market and technology landscape.

Mobile Local Search

Location-based or proximity-based search is a very important factor in presenting local search results. Local search engines use a different algorithm than the main search engines – a location-based algorithm. If a user self-provisions his location (by including a city name, zip code, area code, or address in his query), or if the location information is provided automatically via a GPS or similar, listings can be filtered according to proximity to that particular location (in addition to other metrics/filters) to make them more relevant.

Research Methodology

This report presents mature views of the mobile local search technology and marketplace, which is usually overshadowed with hype. The analysis was predominantly based on a combination of primary and secondary research techniques, including interviews. Through triangulation and cross-verification of information obtained through these sources, this report evaluates the current state of mobile local search technology throughout the industry.

Originally published in 2004 and written by highly acclaimed location technology, applications and services expert, David H. Williams, this research has been updated by equally acclaimed P.J. Louis, formerly an executive with 9-1-1 industry leader True Position. This report has been updated in several areas with a particular emphasis on the business and technical issues, regulations, and impacts of 9-1-1 for VoIP service. This report provides key wireless 911 stakeholders, including state, local, and federal public safety officers, seasoned wireless executives, technology-savvy business executives, investment firms, and the educated consumer, a guide to understand the past, present, and future of wireless 911, also call Enhanced 911 or more often E-911. The report is distinguished from others because it addresses every key dimension of wireless E-911, from technologies, to regulatory issues, to business implications, to privacy implications, and much more. It covers these aspects at both the strategic level and a detailed, tactical level, providing the reader with useable information to set specific direction for his or her area(s) of responsibility.

While this research will be valuable to many in the wireless industry, this report will be of particular interest to:
Suppliers of public safety wireless systems, positioning systems (GPS, A-GPS, E-OTD, TDOA, TOA, AOA, AFLT), and location-based services (LBS) applications and services
Companies concerned with network and systems integration between wireless carriers, public safety answer points (PSAP), and other public safety systems
Providers of Geographic Information Systems (GIS), GIS map data, and related information for mobile location services (MLS)
Mobile network operators and wireless service providers such as resellers, agents, and mobile virtual network operators (MVNO)
Companies involved with next generation networks and concerned with the implementation and operation of E-911 over VoIP networks
Companies, agencies and government entities concerned with public safety, homeland security, and law enforcement
Companies, agencies and government entities outside the United States that want to learn from the US wireless 911 experiences. This will be of particular value to European interests in enhancing wireless 112 emergency calling services
