Industry Definition

The industry comprises establishments acting as agents or brokers in selling annuities and insurance policies. Industry participants earn commission income, mostly as a percentage of the premium of policies sold. They also earn some fee income for risk management consulting and other value added services including insurance program administration. In principle, insurance agents and brokers are fundamentally different. An insurance agent represents the insurance company. An agent can be a captive/tied agent selling policies written by a single insurance carrier/underwriter, or an independent agent selling policies from multiple carriers/underwriters. Alternatively, an insurance broker represents the client and is out to find the most appropriate insurance policy for the clients risk needs. In practice, the difference between agents and brokers is not always as clear with the magnitude of divergence varying across insurance markets.
