Sports nutrition supplements are a multi-billion industry which permeates all sports organizations, most forms of advertising (print, radio and television), and shelves of every grocery store in America. Any time you have a group of people who are interested in adding lean muscle mass or shedding body fat (or both), you are always going to have people looking to make a profit from helping people to reach these goals. They have been around forever, and they will continue to grow as more and more people enter that tenuous journey to redefine the way they look and feel. But what are they, how do they work, and are they getting better or worse with each passing year? Let’s learn more!

Sports nutrition supplements are divided into several different groups, based upon the effects they have upon the body. Some are designed to lead to gains in lean muscle mass. Some deliver pure weight gains, in both fat and muscle form. Others help the users to shed body fat at a greater rate. Finally, there are supplements designed to deliver greater energy to the user. And of course, you will always find hybrids which promise two or more of these desired outcomes. Often, these products will compete for the same resources, and work against one other, rendering both goals unmet. After all, it’s near impossible for the natural bodybuilder to lose fat while gaining muscle. The user needs to be in either a caloric deficit or surplus. A surplus leads to muscle gains, and a deficit leads to fat loss. However, some supplements will claim to do both. Buyer beware!

Since the beginning of any awareness of a body improved by exercise or nutrition, there has also existed a cottage industry of powders and oils which sellers claimed could lead to more shapely physiques and bulging muscles. In the beginning, many of these were pure bunk, and some were even toxic to the user! However, over time, as more and more money flowed to these salesmen and more people entered the sports nutrition supplements industry, the overall quality levels of products across the board improved. As the sport of bodybuilding grew, so did the number of youths interested in finding shortcuts to reaching greater levels of muscle mass. More dollars meant more investors – which meant better products for consumers.

Today, the supplements industry is bigger than it has been at any other time in history. The internet allows people to search for products they desire, purchase them in a minute or two with a few clicks of the mouse, and have these supplements delivered to their door without much trouble at all. There are more variants of products than ever. Granted, like always, there are both good supplements and those without merit. However, today’s advanced in assays (independent laboratory tests which analyze product supplement label claims) and the ability to share information about faulty or worthless products has resulted in fewer and fewer supplement companies trying to rip off customers. The future holds better and better sports nutrition supplements, and more methods for ensuring their effectiveness!

There are certain physiological factors that control loss of body fat. These factors can be enhanced or downplayed to achieve certain ends by using diet supplements popularly referred to as weight loss supplements. Weight loss is not automatic at all. There are men who are relatively lean and yet have potency problems or protruding bellies, problems primarily associated with excess body weight. Some women will swear is despite efforts to lose fats wholesomely, their thigh and butt regions remain adamantly fatty, to use that word.

These conditions are prompted by the physiology of fat loss. Some areas of the human body, like bellies in men and thighs and or butts in women, have more fatty acid receptors that encourage fat storage and conversely block any fat breakdowns. Other parts of the body like the heart or lungs, actually have receptors which amplify fat breakdown. Physiologists identify areas of the human body that are problematic when it comes to fat loss as the lower abs and love handles in men while in women it is the thighs and butt region.

To lose the stubborn fat ingrained in this parts therefore, a body builder must be very particular with his or her diet and complement this diet with intense workouts targeting the specific areas. The idea is to reduce fat intake so that the body will have no alternative than to break down the accumulated fats. Then exercises should specifically target these areas in a bid to amplify fat combustion in the cells. This requires hard work, persistence and patience. Any half-hearted sporadic attempts will not gunner results.

These fat loss attempts can be complemented and sped up by using particular dietary supplements whose ingredients stimulate the fat loss processes in the target areas. Stubborn fats are sometimes impossible to eliminate without using appropriate supplementation. Beneficial fat loss supplements play an important role in the fat loss program of a body builder at times when other efforts towards the same end have resulted to disappointment or outright failure.

Popular fat loss supplements contain two key ingredients namely; norepinephrine and adrenergic receptors. Ideally these two ingredients are the best for stubborn fat loss programs. Whatever the product name and or constitution, a supplement targeting stubborn fat loss must contain both or either one of these key ingredients. Body fat is stored in a particular style as determined and controlled by hormones and receptor density. Although the diet plays an important part in body fat distribution, it is the receptors population or density coupled by specific hormones that control where body fats end up and how much of them.

This is how they work. Adrenaline refers to the excitatory catecholamine, norepinephrine (NE) and epinephrine (E) which are hormonal regulators of fat breakdown process commonly referred to as lipolysis. NE and E activate two types of adrenergic receptors namely; Alphas (1 and 2) receptors and beta 1, 2 and 3) sub-types. Alpha 1 and beta receptors when activated initiates and amplifies a lipolytic process which breaks down body fat while the anti-lipolytic alpha 2 receptors if activated, they blunt fat combustion. Stubborn fat areas therefore feature a higher density of the alpha 2 receptors than the alpha 2 and beta receptors making fat combustion in those areas almost impossible. Fat loss supplements therefore endeavor to deactivate alpha 2 while activating alpha 1 and beta receptors in these regions to achieve lipolysis.

Weight training is general in nature. It is a common term used in bodybuilding and most people take it as merely lifting weights to enhance your muscle development. But there is more to this, there are many forms of weight training but they are rarely separated, one from the other while practicing the whole process.

There is a specific weight training meant for bodybuilding. It is not much different from the other forms though it has some discrepancies. Bodybuilding is mainly about inducing the growth of muscles, a process known as muscle hypertrophy. A body building workout is usually strategically set to include isolation as well as compound exercises, all meant to involve the muscles and assert a level of stress relevant for the respective muscle development. These exercises have different targets, for the compound exercises, it is all about many muscle group involvement and for the isolation exercises it is a target of a specific muscle group. The most repetitions performed per set, ranges between seven to fifteen workouts in each set. The sets are done in a cyclical nature in a way that isolation exercises could be used by an individual to catch up on a lagging muscle and later on move back to compound exercises.

There is also weight training performed for endurance. This is a more complicated formula of approach. Muscular endurance is targeted properly when one uses a higher repetition range of sets. This is usually more than fifteen repetitions per set. However determining the muscle endurance level is much an individual phenomenon depending on the personal goals set for long term. It is therefore left for an individual to structure his weight training for endurance exercises.

There is weight training especially for sports. This depends specifically on the type of spot being targeted. The weight training comes in to ensure that the muscles are well strengthened and their power is drastically increased. The training is not biased though it may target specific groups of muscles all depending on the muscle relevant for the sport. There are situations where the athletes have a weakness and this is the main target of weight training for sports and the reason why it is deemed as more specific. All the choices depend on the individual and the sport being involved in because of the target. It could be for strength, agility, power or even endurance which is an individual business.

Remember that, any form of weight training should always be performed using the best form to avoid possible injuries and load the muscles effectively. In instances where one must overload the muscles, it would be wise to know the specific target and base the exercises on goals set. Also, rest is very important in a way that, it will give you ample time to refresh both physically and mentally in readiness for more exercising. Stick to the principles of every weight training type and the process will never disappoint you in any way.

Steroids have different forms of side effects and they develop at different intensity making it hard for the side effects to be handled all at once. There are side effects which are very strong and therefore, they tend to be the concern of every body builder. On the other note, there are minor side effects of steroids which persist for long yet they remain unnoticed. These side effects develop regularly and eventually they end up being as serious as the major side effects.

Hair loss is one of the most ignored side effects of steroid. This is because it happens at a slow pace and noticing it may be very difficult. But it still remains a hazard since it becomes explosive in the later stages. Continuous use of androgenic steroids leads growth of scalp hair and this is negative impacts which one cannot easily do away with. Mostly, cases of hair loss and the subsequent patterns are directly linked to androgens level within the body tissues. DHT metabolite testosterone is the hormone mostly associated to these kinds of complications. The technical term used to refer to this hair loss type is androgen tic Alopecia. This is the interplay of a genetic predisposition and the androgenic hormones and this brings about such a condition. The people who suffer from such complications have a tendency to hold finer hair follicles and a respective higher level of DHT as compared to the normal, hairy scalp. But with the genetic factor being involved, many of the individual victims do not see the several signs of such side-effects and they may continue with their heavy steroid intake. Just for your information, such victims should avoid the regular intake of such steroids like, testosterone, Halotestin, Anadrol and Dianabol.

Headaches are also a part of the most ignored side effects of steroids. This is because, headaches are brought about by many other aspects for example fatigue and therefore people ignore the whole concept and assume to recovery after a rest. But it is true, steroids bring about headaches and this is through an interruption on the normal functioning of the body system. Heavier bulking is the most form of body building which brings about headaches. Due to conditions of blood pressure emanating from steroid use, headaches are very common. The high blood pressure comes in as a result of low conversion rate of estrogen. With this explanation, headaches do not come directly as a result of steroid use, but their prevalence should not be ignored. Visit a specialist who will give you a guideline to the approaches to adopt and clear the strains of headaches.

These minor side effects may not strain an individual body builder in massive extents but they can be very detrimental in the long term and therefore, you should purpose to handle them appropriately and consider means of treating them to avoid any hiccups in your body building. Learn to take everything serious in steroid use and this will enhance proper and safer use of steroids.

When Lou Ferrigno made his comeback to the Olympia stage in the mid-1990s, it was perhaps the story of the year. Lou was well over 300 pounds in contest shape, a feat unheard of at the time for anyone not named Greg Kovacs. He had never had a problem with mass. He was well over 6 feet tall and, had he not left the bodybuilding stage after Pumping Iron to pursue a career in acting, probably would have won a few Mr. Olympia titles in his day. Big Lou’s biggest issue when making his comeback was losing the body fat. He engaged in several months of crash dieting and massive cardio. He even reported to the muscle magazines at the time that he had been riding the stationary bike for two hours the night before the show, trying to lose more body fat.

The result was a dismal 12th place in a show where he outmassed his nearest competitors by almost forty pounds. Lou later admitted he looked worlds better a few days later, when his carbohydrate stores had finally filled out, and that his muscularity had improved greatly. What lesson can be learned here? The bodybuilder needs a period of rest following a rigorous pre-contest dieting, training, and cardio phase, in order to achieve maximum possible muscularity and conditioning.

Most bodybuilders will consume a wealth of Twinkies, cookies, potatoes, and other high-carbohydrate items in that last 24 to 48 hours before a show to ‘carb up’, or to return their body from the depleted state of the diet to a full physique, complete with bulging muscles and rounded muscle bellies. In the example above, Lou Ferrigno didn’t engage in any form of carbohydrate loading until after his show. He walked onstage with low glycogen stores. He looked stringy and small onstage, and much better later. He should have been at the dinner table eating rice and pasta instead of the treadmill – he would have most certainly made the top 10 as a result!

Muscle clarity is another factor which can be obscured with the use of cardiovascular exercise before a show. Look at your own legs following a cardio session. You don’t see veins popping out, no matter how much blood you forced to them. Rather, you see them clinging to your frame, with your vascularity obscured by the great amount of blood in the region. Cardio kills muscularity, which is why more guys don’t do it in the closing days. The ideal situation is one where the bodybuilder will cut out all cardio training about 10 days before the show. He will use a combination of posing and minimal weight training (light pumping with plenty of reps) to maintain his muscle while allowing his body to recuperate and prepare for the show at hand. Daily flexing for 30 to 45 minutes will help to keep the muscles hard and the vascularity present. If your body fat is too high 7 days out from a show, then you’re not ready to do that show. One week out, you should be sliced and ready to carb up, pose, and mentally prepare yourself over the course of the week.
