After 4 years of training in voice and dance, Se7en made his debut in 2003 and became successful throughout Asia. He has released a total of 5 albums (4 Korean, 1 Japanese) and various singles. Se7en has worked exclusively under the YG Entertainment label. Much of his career is comprised of constant promotions for his songs through live performances on TV, radio shows, and occasionally, concerts. He also began learning Japanese in preparation for his promotional activities for his Japan debut in 2005. He is currently developing his English speaking skills for his upcoming US debut scheduled for 2007. Se7en has traveled throughout Asia, particularly Japan, Taiwan, Thailand, and China. He has also performed a few times in the United States, specifically Los Angeles (Grand Olympic and Hollywood Bowl), New York City (Madison Square Garden), and Washington DC (DAR Constitution Hall). In addition to performing, he has been featured on game shows in South Korea and Japan, and commercials for Samsung’s Anycall, Baskin Robbins, Coca Cola, LG telecom1, Sprite and most recently, K-SWISS2. He has held a total of five concerts in Japan: one held in 2005 at Yokohama, and for the year 2006, two held in Tokyo and two in Osaka3. He held a total of three concerts for his “24/SE7EN” album promotion June 2006 in Seoul, South Korea. His popularity has earned him an award for the Most Popular Korean Singer in the MTV Asia Awards 2006 at Bangkok, Thailand [4], and the MTV Best Buzz Asia Award 2006 [5]. On April 7, 2007, his 747 concert was held at Seoul Olympic Gymnasium, which marks Se7en’s last activity in Korea for this year. He is currently working on his oversea activities in Japan and the United States. He will hold another Japanese tour in Tokyo, Osaka and Nagoya during the summer. After that, Se7en will concentrate on his US debut in the fall6. [edit] American Debut Se7en and YG Family (including Big Bang, Jinusean and Gummy) have made an appearance on MTV K , followed by 3 concerts in Washington DC, New York City, and Los Angeles, to celebrate YG Family’s 10th Anniversary [7] and to help promote Se7en before his American debut. The MTV K documentary aired on December 11, 2006. Se7en has been working with Grammy-winner Rich Harrison on his first American single8, which is expected to be released in June9 and will begin promoting the single near the end of 200710. Yang Heon Seok, (CEO of YG Entertainment) has announced that the American rapper, Fabolous, will be featured in Se7en’s first U.S. single11. However, due to a recent leak of his US debut song, “This is My Year” featuring Fabolous12, on Myspace and YouTube, this will cause some changes in Se7en’s debut in America. Se7en is a featured guest on Amerie’s song, “Take Control” on her album, Because I Love It, which will be released in May 200713. This remix will be only avaliable on Asian verions of the album [14]. [edit] Acting career Se7en accepted the lead role for the Korean drama Goong S, a spinoff of the popular drama Goong. The first episode of Goong S premiered on January 10, 2007 on MBC ; the average nationwide rating for the entire series was 9.7%, which was considerably lower than the ratings of its predecessor, Goong. Despite the low ratings, Goong S was the most searched and rewatched drama online; ranked higher than its competition: KBS2 Dal Ja’s Spring and SBS Surgeon Bong Dal Hee15. The drama has also gained a wide variety of support from international fans in the U.S., Thailand, Malaysia, Brazil, Singapore and the Philippines16. Although he is aware that criticisms still remain, he has taken note of those criticisms and is determined to continue acting in the near future [17]. [edit] Artistry [edit] Voice Se7en’s vocal range can be classified in the tenor range. His voice can be described as smooth, mellow, and sometimes mildly abrasive (see vocal belting) when songs, such as “Crazy” and “I Know,” call for it. He often sings with a vibrato in his voice that American R&B singers are known for, and also incorporates beatboxing into many of his songs such as “Passion.” Se7en maintains an adamant belief that he should not lipsync during his live performances18. [edit] Dance Se7en’s signature handstandAdditionally, Se7en is known for his dance moves. His dance style, like his vocals, can also be described as “leaning more towards freestyle” rather than heavy choreography. Some dance techniques he sports during live performances are gliding, popping of the chest, and various one-handed handstands, swipe, and kicks. His signature handstand, which he executes during his “Come Back to Me” performances, is the Nike (see picture). Most recently, he has been executing the gainer and the pike (see breakdance) during his “I Know” performances.
Super Junior (Korean: ?????) is a 13 member K-pop boyband. The group initially debuted with 12 members on November 6, 2005 with their first single, Twins. The original 12 members, in age order (from oldest to youngest), were LeeTeuk (the leader), HeeChul, HanKyung, n May 23, 2006 SM Entertainment announced the addition of a new member, Cho KyuHyun, being the youngest member. The new 13 membered group released its new look and its newest single U online on May 25, 2006. The title song became a success and enjoyed the #1 spot on music programs for the first time in the group’s caYeSung, KangIn, ShinDong, SungMin, EunHyuk, DongHae, SiWon, RyeoWook, and KiBum. By the time of the debut, eleven of the members were Korean and one was Chinese. The Chinese member, HanKyung, was picked among from 3000 applicants through auditions held in China by SM Entertainment in 2001. Many of the members had already made a name for themselves prior to Super Junior’s debut through acting, VJ-ing, and modeling. On May 23, 2006 SM Entertainment announced the addition of a new member, Cho KyuHyun, making them the 13 member group they are today. Before their official debut, Super Junior was already a hot topic over the Internet. News broke about SM Entertainment’s unprecedented plans of forming a large 12 member group. Rumors about the identity of the members as well as the group’s name circulated for months. For awhile, many speculated that they were going to be known as “Common Ground.” Another speculation claimed that the band was going to be called “O.V.E.R” (Obey the Voice for Each Rhythm). Before officially debuting as a group, they had already made appearances on television via acting, VJing on music programs, or modeling. Some of the members still continue to do so today, such as Kim Hee Chul, Choi Si Won and Kim Ki Bum, who are active in dramas and movies. Super Junior has been criticized in the past for lipsynching and lack of vocal skills, specifically for shaky pitch and heavy breathing. 1 The criticisms worsened in July 2006 when they lipsynched on Show! Music Core (?! ????) of MBC , a show that guarantees all live performance. While fans have defended them saying that HeeChul was ill, their critics argued that they shouldn’t have to because they are a large 13 member group, Hee Chul being ill does not account for all 13 members.[3] Despite this, they have still remained popular through their strong fanbase and their album sales have been strong. KyuHyun, RyeoWook, and YeSung have formed a separate trio under the name Super Junior – K.R.Y. and participated in the Original Soundtrack of tvN Drama Hyena with a total of three tracks, including the main theme. The trio is part of SM Entertainment’s strategy to not limit the Super Junior’s activities to always performing altogether. Super Junior – K.R.Y.’s first official performance was on November 4th on KBS ’s “Music Bank”[7]. In addition, many of the members have appeared on variety shows individually, DJ-ing and some of the members continue to host Mnet’s M!Countdown. There is also a second new unit “Super Junior T(Trot)” which will be starting new activities. They will be releasing their first new single “Rokkuguh” on the 23rd February, and debuting on Inkigayo on the 25th. The six members of Super Junior T include Eeteuk, Heechul, Kangin, Shindong, Sungmin and Eunhyuk.
