Who is J.K. Rowling? When the first book in the Harry Potter series was made, it changed children everywhere. Kids began to be interested in magic, wizards, witches, and many other fantasy creatures. Rowling's books have touched the hearts of children around the world. The books took the reader into a world were a normal child could go from the real world into a magical world. It is about children learning about their magical powers, and all the wonderful things that they use the magic for. Joanne Rowling was born in England. After she finished school, she found work as a secretary. Later she spent time teaching English in Portugal. After that she moved to Scotland, with her daughter. She now lives in Scotland with her husband and two children. Rowling chose to become a writer when she was just six years old. It was then that she wrote her first book. It was a story about a rabbit called "Rabbit". She had always wanted to become a writer. At home when she was a child, her house was full of books because her parents loved to read. One important thing to her as a writer was that she did not believe in giving up. It was important to her to keep trying until she succeeds. Many times J.K. Rowling told people how she came up with the idea of Harry Potter. She told newspapers that while she was taking a long train journey to in England she came up with the idea. She made the idea while her little girl slept beside her on the train. At that moment she decided she should write about a boy who didn't know he was a wizard, and the wizard school he ended up going to. It took Rowling close to five long years to finish the first Harry Potter book. At the same time, she also made plans about how to write the next six books after it. She believed that the Harry Potter series should have seven books total. This is because she wanted each of the books to talk about one year of Harry's life in Hogwarts. All the Harry Potter books always are based on the fight between good and evil. Some of Mrs. Rowling names in the books came from some unusual places. The name "Hedwig" was a saints name. The name "Dumbledor" is an old English word that means bumble bee. The name "Snape" is the name of a place in England. Also Rowlings says that many of the names she just made herself. The word "Quidditch" and "Muggle" are two words that she made herself. J. K. Rowling went on the internet on World Book day, and chatted with some of her fans. She also said it is possible but not likely that there might be an eighth book. One that will talk about Harry when he is all grown up. It would talk about Harry after he leaves Hogwarts, the academy for wizards. About the AuthorScott C. Waring has a BA degree in Elementary Education and a Masters Degree in Counseling Education. Feel like dressing up in a Harry Potter costume? In addition to finding the right clothes, there is one other item you need to complete your ensemble: A wand! The question is, where do you find a good wand? Your cheapest option is to find a nice stick and pretend it's a wand. You could even sand it smooth and give it a little polish. Either way, it will certainly get the idea across. However, it will still be just a stick. How much cooler would it be to "swish and flick" a truly elegant wand that looks like it came straight out of Harry Potter's world? There are a few places online where you can buy your wand. Amazon might seem like the logical place to start, but if you want a quality wand, be careful: Much of the Harry Potter wands that Amazon sells are cheap toys. If you're willing to spend at least $35 for a decent wand, check out the Noble Collection. This company produces many fine replicas of magical items you see in the Harry Potter movies, wands just being one example. You can find reproductions of wands wielded by Harry, Hermione, Ron, and Voldemort, just to name a few. The problem with the wands by Noble Collection is that they are made partly or entirely from resin, and they tend to be fragile. If you want a quality wand made from wood, consider ordering a wand from Whirlwood or Alivan's. In particular, the Whirlwood wands by Gary Hall are beautifully made. Most of them are made from a solid piece of hard maple wood. They are elegant and durable. You'd have a hard time breaking one! Although you wouldn't want to treat one of these wands carelessly, you'll have less to fear if you decide to make it part of your Harry Potter costume. They start at $50, but considering what you get, they are worth the price. Similarly, Alivan's wands are made from wood. They don't appear to be as top-notch as the Whirlwood wands, but they are still fine wooden wands. You also get a much wider range of choices and lower prices. If you spend a little time browsing online at these places, you're sure to find the wand that suits you. About the Author Interested in learning more about Harry Potter wands and wandmakers? Among the most appreciated strategy games, wizard chess occupies a most favorite place combining fantasy features and great animation. Just like in traditional chess, two forces are fighting to achieve glory and fame, but the pieces here are represented by humans and imaginary beings like dwarfs and elves. In wizard chess the battle field is no longer the traditional background but some location of your choice; you may go for a ruined temple, a desert in the middle of nowhere or an exotic location. You will have to built the same strategy as you would have done in a regular chess game, building the strategy and preparing to give the final strike. The popularity of wizard chess is closely connected with the virtual features of the game: first of all we need to mention the variety of game modes and camera views. You can get a full view and change the perspective to different angles according to your choice and purpose; moreover you can actually enjoy some very exquisite background music. We should also mention the wizard chess variant released after the model presented by J.K. Rowling in her best-seller Harry Potter. This type of game is available only online and there are comprehensive tutorials that ensure rapid game skill development. Harry Potter wizard chess follows the model designed in the first movie inspired by Rowling's novel: Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone. Besides the online variant, classical forms of wizard chess have also been manufactured. Thus, together with a fold out board, you'll get a chess set identical to the one in the movie, the colors, the pieces are the same; furthermore, you'll also find some instructions that will help you adjust to the several extra rules additional to classic chess. The pictures available in the set will also reveal the way the pieces should move. For anyone interested in wizard chess, it can be either played or purchased online when ordered. The prices vary from $ 15.00 to over $100, and it is you to decide which model to choose; therefore, you should check all the game features before paying for it. You may even get the same wizard chess from various sites at different prices; hence, look for scores before making up your mind. As for the “classical†variant of wizard chess, there could be shipment fees that are included in the package, which would justify a higher price. If you were a wizard or a witch in Harry Potter's world, you would not be complete without a magic wand. You would use your wand to cast spells; the wand would channel your magic powers. If you were a very powerful wizard, you might even be able to work magic without a wand. However, without a wand, you would find it rather difficult if not impossible to perform a powerful or focused spell. Does the wand increase your magical ability? No, it is actually more correct to think of the wand as a focus for your magic. In this way the wand is like a magnifying glass, and your magic like sunlight. Sunlight can burn leaves when it's focused through a glass. You would probably buy your wand from Ollivander, who is renowned as one of the greatest wand makers alive. But if you live in Europe, you might instead buy your wand from the venerable Gregorovitch. However, Ollivander's family has been making wands for a very long time... since 382 B.C., in fact. Your wand would be fashioned from a single piece of wood, and it would have some special substance as its magic core. If you bought your wand from Ollivander, it would either contain a unicorn hair, dragon heartstring, or a phoenix feather. Gregorovitch and other wand makers use other materials, though; veela hair would not be uncommon. You would not choose your wand; the wand would be the one to choose you. Wands are funny things that have their own laws and personalities. Wands are loyal to the wizards they choose. If you happened to lose or break your wand, you could borrow another wizard's wand, but it would not feel natural. Wizards and witches have the most success with their own wands. Your wand would probably reflect some facet of your personality, or perhaps reveal something of your powers. This is common. Hagrid's wand was made from oak, a very strong tree. Dolores Umbridge is short, and so is her wand. The wood of your wand might correspond with your date of birth according to a Celtic calendar. True enough, for each month in the Celtic year is represented by a tree, and each tree is associated with certain qualities and powers. It's a lot like the zodiac that way. Consider Harry's wand: It's made of Holly, and it corresponds with his birthday on July 31st. Holly is a symbol for protection, luck, and death and rebirth. Now if you were to attend a class on wand lore at Hogwarts, you would probably receive full marks!
