Great American barbecue isn’t easy in Bangkok but there’s one place where you can count on it and that’s at Roadhouse Barbecue, located on the corner of Surawong and Rama IV Roads. This
three-story restaurant/bar is home to great American food including barbecue specialties like barbecued ribs, pulled pork sandwiches, barbecued chicken and many more that represent true American barbecue at its best. There’s also a large selection of American favorites from burgers and steaks to soups and sandwiches. But the real stars of the menu here are the barbecued specialties starting with ribs smoked with mesquite wood – imported from the U.S. – and including chicken smoked with hickory wood, pork for pulled pork sandwiches and even salmon smoked with apple wood. You can get a half or full rack of ribs or a chicken and ribs combo dish, all of which are served with potatoes and cole slaw made from an old North Carolina recipe. And although the barbecue gets the most attention, they actually serve more burgers here than anything else. You can get yours with three different kinds of cheese as well as toppings like grilled onions, smoked bacon, sauteed mushrooms and grilled peppers. Another big favorite is the Buffalo Wings which are on special every Monday night when you can get 20 wings for the price of 10 (170 baht). As for more American food, the menu also contains sandwiches such as a Philly cheese steak, a “Texas-style” beef brisket sandwich, a chipotle pulled pork sandwich, a three-cheese grilled cheese and tomato, a BLT with apple-smoked bacon, a fish sandwich, a grilled sausage sandwich with pepper and onions. Well, you get the idea. They cover a lot of bases here. They’re also very proud of their chili and they should be since it won an award in a stateside competition a while back sanctioned by the Chili Appreciation Society International. In addition to the chili pot here there are also a number of soup pots simmering all the time and they’re full of roasted red Pepper and tomato soup, black bean soup and a real New England seafood chowder. There are a lot of other menu items here including steaks, seafood, some pastas and even a great grilled pork chop. It’s not all about food here, though. First, there’s Thailand’s largest selection of draft beers which also happen to be the coldest in Bangkok according to a magazine poll last year. Next, there’s live entertainment almost every night downstairs after the dinner hour. On the second floor is another dining room that can be used for private functions or parties. And finally, on the third floor is Roadhouse’s version of a sports bar with plenty of TV screens and lots of games to play including foosball, video golf and soccer and pool on an authentic Brunswick championship table. So there are a lot of reasons to visit Roadhouse Barbecue and while the barbecue may be the most publicized of the attractions here don’t forget about everything else, especially the great service and friendly atmosphere. Underwater World Pattaya is leisure attraction showcasing the rich variety of marine life found around the region. It is located 200 meters south of Tesco Supermarket in South Pattaya. It covers a total area of 4,000 square meters of land and is contained in a structure that replicates a large circus tent. The aquarium presently houses over 4,000 marine animals, encompassing more than 200 different species from the area as well as some rare creatures from abroad. They are all in the ecosystem of underwater world. In Underwater World Pattaya, visitors are taken on a “voyage to the bottom of the sea”, which begins at the sandy beaches and shallow rock pools at the water’s edge. From here, you descend into a pedestrian tunnel, passing brightly colored corals and all kinds of exotic ocean-dwellers along the way. The tunnel is 100 meter long and is made of 6.4-centimetre-thick acrylic. It allows you to witness the homes of great shoals of fish, prowling predators and a host of other creatures that inhabit the ocean depths.
Underwater World Pattaya also plays an important role in education and marine conservation. School visits are actively supported, and new educational programs are constantly being developed. A lot of thought has been put into the architectural design of the Underwater World. The structure, similar to a large circus tent, enables the place to have natural light that nurtures the algae. The showcase of Underwater World begins at the Touch Pool area, which is a shallow pool that allows visitors to observe and interact with underwater animals such as bamboo sharks, stingrays, starfish, and many species of fish, seaweeds, coloured corals and archer fish. Children and adults alike can touch sea cucumbers and other aquatic life in this pool. More adventurous tourists can volunteer to feed the animals (by paying a fee of around 2500 baht, with gear). The acrylic underwater passageway is divided into 3 zones. The first part is the “Reef Zone”. This features coral reef and an abundance of colourful fish that are relaxing to watch. The next zone is the “Sharks and Rays”, displaying sharks, sting rays, ray sharks and turtles among other creatures from the sea. The last is the “Shipwrecks Zone” featuring various kinds of fish that are edible. Visitors looking for closer encounters with the residents of the deep sea can try snorkeling or scuba diving within the aquariums. There is a feeding show which usually takes place at around 2pm.This is interesting to watch as experienced divers feed fish like sting rays and sharks. Visitor’s must-see the rare shovelnose ray, a hybrid between a shark and a stingray. There are three of them at the aquarium that were purchased from local fishermen, who normally kill them for consumption. The Underwater world, built in 2003, is a popular tourist attraction. Underwater World is open from 9.00 a.m. 6.00 p.m. There’s a souvenir shop at exit if you wish to take a memento back home. Hotel pick-up/drop off from any hotel in Pattaya (South Pattaya) is provided. So if you’re planning to visit Pattaya be sure to check out this modern marvel to encounter the creatures of the deep at a close distance. There are numerous hotels to choose from in Pattaya to make your stay a comfortable one.

1 Simon Cabaret
At a crossroads between the airport and Phuket Town there is a statue of two famous female warriors called Muk and Chan who, in 1785, repelled a Burmese invasion by dressing up all Phuket’s townswomen as men and then lining them up on the ramparts to seemingly swell the defenders’ numbers. These days, however, the cross-dressing is more the other way around. The Thai word ‘katoi’ can mean either ‘transvestite’ or ‘transexual’. If in doubt, don’t ask. Whatever they exactly are, the katoi performers of Simon Cabaret having been amazing foreigners and turning Western catwalk queens green with envy for decades. This hugely popular and often hilarious cabaret wows audiences with stunning sets, glittery gowns and choreography so balletic that it would do Broadway justice. These boys who are girls stiletto-strut their stuff to full houses every night of the week – not to be missed. www.phuket.com 2 Phuket Fantasea The very biggest of all Phuket’s extravaganzas, Fantasea brings Las Vegas-style entertainment to the island. Remarkable acrobatics, amazing animal antics, dazzling light work and stunning set designs combine in a song and dance spectacular that brings to life Phuket’s history and mythology in a spell-bindingly unique way. 3 Fantasy of a Kingdom Culture – Illusion Show Particularly visually arresting are the aerial acrobatics, indoor pyrotechnics, special effects and stunts. 4 Phuket Aquarium offers the opportunity to observe local marine life up close and without the necessity of diving beneath the waves. More than a hundred aquatic species are housed at this facility, which is one of Thailand’s principle centres for research into the whales, dugongs, sharks, dolphins and sea turtles that make their homes in the nearby waters. The best time to go is in the late afternoon so that you can afterwards watch the sunset on the nearby seafront, which has a few modest and never over-crowded restaurants. www.phuketaquarium.org 5 Khao Phra Thaeo Wildlife Conservation Centre. 22 square kilometers of virgin forest conserve a number of wild animals which would otherwise be extinct in fast-growing Phuket. Wild boar grunt as they forage around giant trees supported by huge buttresses and thick with creepers. Towering tall, these mighty trees are alive with the cries of gibbons, civet, macaques, squirrels, flying squirrels, bats, flying lemurs and chameleons. Nearby, the park’s Ton Sai Waterfall is a bit of a disappointment, even when in full flood during the rainy season. 6 Thai Village and Orchid Farm. With 20,000 varieties of orchid and tropical trees on display, this tour follows a typical southern Thai lunch with a spectacular cultural show including Thai dances, Thai boxing, souther customs and elephant antics. Relaxation is aided by the lilting sounds of Thai classical and folk music played on traditional instruments.
