Is it possible to take the exhaust from the mighty diesel engines of a locomotive and use it to fire up a powerful high-energy CO2 Laser? Why would you do that you ask? Well consider using it for propulsion. How so you ask? Well, what if you took all the exhaust out of the top of a locomotive and funneled it into a series of pipes. One the CO2 exhaust and soot was concentrated in the tubes you could hit it with a laser and the incredible combustion, which occurred could in fact be used to propel the locomotive? Some physicists to whom I have proposed this idea say it is simply nuts as it takes a lot to move a locomotive. Hundreds of thousands of pounds of thrust in fact, yet we are not using the laser to move the train from Zero, breaking ground to 20 miles per hour. But rather using the exhaust like a turbo on a car, blowing it back into a secondary use. In this case instead of heated CO2 going back into the engine, some would of course, as most diesels are turbo, the remaining exhaust would be sent into the set of many many parallel pipes and hit with a laser. Each pipe would have a reflector in it and the laser would be sent in and reflected onto the CO2 concentrated in the pipe trying to escape and act like a super heated thruster adding additional propulsion and also removing much of the pollution at the same time. Many people look to hydrogen fuel cells as the answer to our energy issues. The only problem, of course, is creating usable hydrogen. Chocolate production may be the answer. Mention hydrogen as a fuel source and politicians, scientists and techies get that glassed over look in their eyes. Simply put, hydrogen is a perfect fuel. It can be combined with oxygen to produce electricity. Hydrogen is the most comment element on our planet. When used as an energy source, it produces no greenhouse gases or other pollutants. Sounds great, right? There is just one problem with the idea of using hydrogen as the solution to all of our energy problems. While hydrogen is the most common element on our planet, it is rarely found in a usable form. Instead, hydrogen tends to cling to other elements such as oxygen, which gives us H2O – water. The power required to separate hydrogen from these other elements is shockingly large. In the United States, Honda has a number of hydrogen vehicles it is testing on the road via some families. The cars work well. Powering them, however, is the problem. The families must take the cars to a specific station at a Honda facility. There, they will find a few hundred feet of solar panels and a hydrogen tank. It takes the system roughly two to three weeks to create enough usable hydrogen for one full tank for the car. Given the fact there are millions of cars on the road, you can see the problem. Yes, there are more efficient methods for conversion than solar power, but nothing remotely efficient enough to create enough usable hydrogen. In a humorous turn, scientists in the UK have discovered that hydrogen can be produced from the wastes of creating confectionaries such as chocolate. The waste is treated with e coli bacteria. Yes, that e coli. The bacteria then process the food material and produces gas. Guess what kind of gas is produced? Yes, hydrogen. Could it be that chocolate will play a fundamental role in a hydrogen fuel future? Could we really be that lucky? There are many environmental type groups and OSHA watchdog groups calling for the complete banning of Nano Technologies and yet these new technologies could change everything and completely revolutionize nearly every industry. Even the FDA is being attacked for being slow to develop rules and regulations concerning NanoTech. The EPA is concerned and already has several committees on the subject to protect water supplies, the air we breath and make sure nothing escapes from the manufacturing process or laboratories. Of course Michael Crieghton’s “Prey” did not help anyone’s emotional fears in the matter. The story of course being about a NanoTech project in the middle of the Nevada Desert going totally wrong. Yes some regulations might be needed but it is hard to say to what extent, as that will not be known for some time. The real problem of course is the fact that if we over-regulate now then many start-ups will not be able to make the breakthroughs needed to make the industry worthy of investment and capital flows. Indeed, NanoTech will revolutionize medicine, make our Space Program five times as efficient and save Americans fuel by lightening our automobiles. In fact NanoTech will provide better strength in materials and light weight to improve aircraft performance, trucks, trains, ships, spacecraft, as well as help with better building materials and unique high-tech features for schools, home entertainment systems, transparent ceiling to watch the stars all at a flick of a switch. NanoTech, will make everything better, more efficient and stronger too. So, why impede the future at a time when we need solutions? Consider this in 2006.
