Sony Pictures Partners in Green Energy Waste Compost Program

Glimpsing at the current condition of our natural world and economic market and the benefits associated with renewable energy utilization, there is really no wonder why large movie picture conglomerates are makingwaste-compost-sony the transition to green energy programs. Sony Pictures Entertainment is the preliminary affiliate in a new organic waste program initiated through a recent unanimous vote by the Culver City Council, where the studio is centered. The program, which begins June 8th, is significant in many ways; it brings a vital source of renewable energy to an especially outsized city, the composted waste will be sold to local farmers which will provide them with cheaper organic fertilizer to sustain their efforts, tax dollars saved by developing renewable energy will be helpful toward the local economy, waste will be reduced by immense proportions, and last – but not least – Sony’s switch to renewables will inspire other large corporations to move in the same direction. Mayor Andy Weissman, states, “Culver City has implemented a number of recycling programs designed to give local businesses and city residents the tools they need to reduce the amount of waste that gets sent to landfills… We are excited about this organic composting pilot program with Sony Pictures which stands to reduce waste by up to 1,000 tons per year.”

Sony Pictures is reportedly the first and only movie studio to receive ISO14001 certification, which is the global standard for controlling a corporation’s environmental influence. The conglomerate has had a wide-spread studio sustainability system instituted for more than four years and has worked to reduce their personal carbon footprint by implicating practices to moderate climate change, protect and conserve natural resources and help safeguard health and security of the community by applying policies that involve it’s facility procedures and employees, product production, customer products and community outreach. These accomplished renewable energy measures are thanks to Sony Pictures Entertainment’s Chairman and CEO Michael Lynton and Co-Chairman Amy Pascal, who has worked vigorously to apply these vital energy conservation customs to the studio. “We’re proud to partner with Culver City on this important initiative… Ultimately, we want to become a ‘zero waste’ facility, and this program gets us vastly closer to reaching that goal on our lot.” stated Jon Corcoran, Vice President of Environmental Sustainability for the studio. Finally, we have seen change we can all believe in.

About Mothers Day

Mother's Day is intended to be a day to celebrate motherhood. Many churches and families in the United States recognize the second Sunday in May to honor mothers.

Many years ago, England observed a day to honor mothers in mid-Lent that was called Mothering Sunday. In the United Kingdom, Mothers' Day is celebrated in March.

The first known suggestion of Mother's Day in the United States was in 1872 by Julia Ward Howe. She suggested that people observe the day on June 2 as a day dedicated to peace. Others around the country campaigned for a Mother's Day including Mary Towles Sasseen, Frank E. Hering, and Anna Jarvis. In 1908, Anna Jarvis of West Virginia began a campaign for a nationwide observance of Mother's Day. She chose the second Sunday in May and started the custom of wearing a carnation. If a person wears a colored carnation, their mother is is living. A white carnation signifies that their mother has passed away.

In 1914, President Woodrow Wilson signed a joint resolution of Congress recommending that Congress and the executive branch of government recognize the observance of Mother's Day.

So what do you get Mom for her special day?

Red Ribbon Week Origin Red Ribbon Week Origin by C.S. Mackay

When Red Ribbon Week started back in 1988 it was to honor a young DEA (Drug Enforcement Administration) Agent by the name of Enrique Camarena. His friends knew him by the name of 'Kiki.' He was kidnapped and killed in Mexico back in 1985. He had uncovered a multi-billion dollar drug scam which might have involved the Mexican Army, police force and government. When he left his office one day, five men kidnapped him. He was found about a month later buried in a shallow grave. He had been tortured and beaten.

In 1988 the U.S. Congress proclaimed the first Red Ribbon Week supporting the cause that 'Kiki' had given his life for. It is one of the first times that ribbons were used to support a cause, the fight against drugs. Now ribbons are used all the time to show support such as, missing children, fights against major diseases, and support our military.

Many teachers were around when this first happened and they were concerned about teaching about drugs in the classroom. This was not their area of expertise. On the other hand they could see that in ten years this might be a required subject so they started preparing for what they felt was the inevitable.

Teachers started gearing up for what they knew was coming. They took classes to educate themselves about drugs. These drugs were foreign to them and thet needed time to learn about the causes of drug abuse and the effects and results of drug abuse. Teachers started implementing their own programs or programs offered by the states so that they might get ahead of the problem. They found ways to teach children about alcohol, smoking and drugs. They implimented into their science and health lessons. They role played and did demonstrations.

In my classroom I found that having a play / skit about drugs brought the children a sense of ownership and they wanted to pass on their knowledge to their friends and peer groups. This they did by putting on plays and skits in assemblies for the whole school. Audience participation was a must and the students looked forward to participating.

Sometimes the best way to attack a problem is with a sense of humor so that a scary subject does not seem over whelming to a child. Thus, humor was incorporated into the plays / skits to soften the hard message that needed to be given.

Using fun plays, skits, and programs during Red Ribbon Week is a way to get students involved in the fight against drugs. Audience participation encourages all who are there to stand up and be counted in the fight against drugs. Just as 'Kiki' stood up and had the courage to fight even though he died in doing so. His legacy lives on in Red Ribbon Week and in the DARE programs that are used throughout this country.
