Advantages of Vegetarianism - A Checklist

There are many advantages of vegetarianism. I will not cover them all, but rather hit on the most important and common. Some apply to everyone, and some do not.

Before we review the advantages of vegetarianism, let's take a look at the definition, as stated in Wikipedia. "Vegetarianism is the practice of a diet that excludes all animal flesh, including poultry, game, fish, shellfish or crustacea, and slaughter by-products." And there are more than one "level" of vegetarianism. The advantages would be the same for all levels. The benefits would be greater at some levels.

There are monetary, spiritual, moral, and nutritional (health) advantages to vegetarianism. Of course some people could come up with more, but these cover most of the basics. And that is what we will be covering.

1. Monetary: Today, more than ever, this one of the top advantages of vegetarianism. Everyone is looking at costs!

a. Meat is costly to raise and process, and it wastes a lot of natural resources in comparison to raising plant based foods.

b. If we take meat out of our grocery bill, we will reduce it by approximately half.

c. Medical costs in the United States alone, directly caused by meat consumption, are in the billions of dollars.

2. Spiritual: Religion and politics are two topics that I like to keep to myself. There are religions that prohibit the intake of meat. There are those that believe the animal's spirits stay with them long after you consume the meat.

3. Moral: Thousands of animals are killed in slaughter houses everyday. The way that they are bred, raised and treated is guided by one goal. That is the end result. More meat for the market. These methods include the cutting off of unnecessary body parts, artificial fattening, and overcrowded conditions. Also these animals are a waste of the world's land and grain resources. If the land was used for raising grain and the grain from that and what would have been wasted on animals, was used to feed humans, it could save a part of the millions of people that die from starvation and related diseases each year.

4. Nutritional (Health): Saving the most important for last! Here again there are many reasons that fit into this category, and I could not possibly cover them all. But I will hit on the most important. Pay close attention to these advantages of vegetarianism.

a. The alkaline based system of humans does not break down the acid substance that is mostly found in meat. Meat eating animals have an acid based system, better designed to break down meat.

b. Higher levels of cholesterol and fat contained in meat are the major causes of many health problems today. Actually, our bodies produce enough cholesterol, that we don't need any in our diet.

c. Colon cancer is at an all time high. This is mostly due to the fact that it takes meat so long to get out of your system. It could stay in the colon for 3 to 4 days or longer. We have over 25 feet of twisted and coiled intestines, which make it even harder to get rid of meat. Meat eating animals have less than a quarter of that and they are mostly straight.

d. Aging is due to cells breaking down and wearing out. There are 3 main purposes for cells. They take in oxygen and nutrition, and they remove waste. Meat has more waste and therefore uses more resources to remove that waste. This causes the breakdown of the cells to accelerate.

e. Obesity can be reduced by a higher consumption of vegetarian diet foods and less consumption of high fat meat products. This combined with regular exercise can have a dramatic effect not only on weight loss, but lower blood pressure and cholesterol.

f. The risk of heart disease can be reduced significantly by eating less meat. The cholesterol and fat found in meat can cause plague buildup on the arteries. This in turn reduces the blood flow. This causes the normal immune systems to become impaired. This is a big concern, as heart disease is the number one cause of deaths in the United States today!

So there you have it. Many of the advantages of vegetarianism, but certainly not all of them. It would take more room than I have here to cover them all. Different people have different reasons for turning to vegetarianism. Personally, I think that the health benefits would be the most appealing of all. Certainly, most of the advantages of vegetarianism would be appealing to a lot of people.

The Maui Ocean Centre, newly voted Hawaiians top rated family attraction, is just one of the the family gracious riches youll find on Maui.  

Take your kids to the Paper Airplane Museum, where 2,000 models swing from the ceiling and tin can airplanes adorn the stockade. Or taking an annoy on a frank 1890s train on the Lahaina.   Perhaps the core attract of Maui is the way it manages to have a little bit of everything. It is simultaneously an undeveloped jungle and an active city. By present the complete combination of private physical beauty and sophisticated commercial charm, this little island manages to handle a unique place in everyones core.

Burmese Pythons

Burmese pythons are increasingly common as exotic pets, but there are some things to keep in mind about their care.

These snakes grow to enormous size, some up to 20 feet long. Since they can also live a quarter of a century, an owner should be prepared for a substantial responsibility. Many owners, unable to provide a home for very large snakes, have released them into the wild and damaged ecosystems in some states.

Burmese pythons are generally considered very docile for their size, but can still be dangerous after getting to eight feet long. An owner or handler should always have another person present when feeding or handling a python of this size or larger.

A young snake can be housed in a 55 gallon tank with newspaper floor, but larger snakes require larger and larger enclosures, with the largest needing entire rooms. The room should be extra well sealed so that the snake does not escape. Linoleum floors work well. There should be many hides for the snake, such as logs or even a tree. Be careful of lamps, as a python might easily burn itself.

Young pythons eat mice, moving up to rabbits as they grow. The prey you select for your python should be approximately as wide as its body, and should be alive when presented to it.

Make sure to maintain temperatures of at least 80 degrees in the day and 70 and night. Your python will need a pan of water when young and perhaps a whole swimming pool when older.

Pythons are an enormous responsibility, but a great challenge for an ambitious owner.
