The importance of storing your essential oils in a proper manner can be estimated from the fact that women in the 19th century would ask their jewelers to design special bottles to hold their perfumes and essential oils. Luxury apart, storing essential oils in specially designed bottles helped keep the therapeutic and aromatic properties of the essential oils intact. It is common knowledge that most of the essential oils become contaminated or their effect gets weakened with time if they are not stored properly. Citrus oils are the most susceptible to early breakdown. They oxidize and begin to lose the aroma and therapeutic properties. The citrus oil becomes cloudy and a sweet fragrance is emitted. This signals towards the deterioration of the essential oil. Same does not apply to oils such as frankincense, sandalwood, patchouli, and myrrh. They can be stored for a longer time. In fact, they improve with time. In the older times, Egyptians used to embalm the dead people with the essential oils of cedar wood, cinnamon etc. When one such tomb was opened in the early 20th century, traces of the oil were clearly visible. Will you not like to keep your treasured essential oils in the same manner? Lifetime of the essential oil ranges from 6 months to several years. Through a proper storage, one can increase the shelf life of an essential oil. The following section provides lessons in storing essentials oils. Dark amber, cobalt blue, or violet glass bottles are the best when it comes to storing essential oils. Sunlight can be very harmful for the essential oils. Ultraviolet rays, which are a part of the sunlight, weaken the essential oil. This explains the reason why it is not advisable to store essential oils in clear glass bottles. Sunlight easily passes through the clear glass bottle, thus producing reaction in the essential oil, and no longer rendering it effective. Plastic bottles too must not be used as the plastic dissolves with the essential oil and thus is contaminated. One can use aluminum bottles to store the essential oil, but the inner surface of the container must be lined. Your essential oils need to be kept away from sunlight as far as possible. High temperature can be harmful to the oil. Therefore, the place where the essential oil is stored must not be near any heater vent or any such heat-emitting gadget. Keeping the oil in a refrigerator can help increase its shelf life. Nevertheless, freezing is not acceptable. When cooled at very low temperatures, some essential oils will cloud. It regains its original state when brought to room temperature. Certain citrus oils continue to be cloudy even when brought to room temperature. However, this does not affect their therapeutic properties. We tend to contaminate the essential oil in the process of using them. The following checklist will be helpful in preventing contamination: • Never touch the top of the orifice reducer or the inside of the cap. • Always use separate pipettes for separate oil. • The pipettes must not be carriers of oxygen. When one uses the pipette for taking out the oil, a few drops of it remain in the pipette. This becomes contaminated when it comes in contact with oxygen outside. When the same pipette is used again, it contaminates the whole bottle. The cap of the bottle containing essential oils must not be kept open for long. Since they are volatile, they will evaporate. The cap of the bottle containing essential oil must be selected carefully. Rubber droppers have a tendency to turn into gum when they come in contact with the concentrated essential oil. Keeping these points in mind, one can surely increase the shelf life of the essential oils. This might require a few extra efforts and might become expensive in some cases, but your treasured essential oils truly deserve this. Poetry is the language of love. For centuries, poems have expressed intimate feelings and emotions, and have been used to record significant thoughts and events in an artistic form. Naturally, a wedding ceremony is the perfect forum for a heartfelt poetry reading. Wedding poetry is a lovely gift for the bride and groom when it is composed and be read by a close friend or a member of the family. If you would like to offer this personal gift but are not a poet at heart, you can turn to a professional wedding writer to create a composition. Readings of poetry by literary greats like Keats or Wordsworth, or even beautiful song lyrics can also bring an element of romance and beauty to the ceremony or reception. If it is decided that the task of writing the wedding poem will be delegated to an experienced professional, the bride and groom or a family member should choose the composer carefully and coordinate with the writer as often as possible. Before choosing the poet to compose your piece, consider what style of poetry you desire. An elegantly written poem is best for a traditional or formal wedding. Poetry with a touch of humour can bring fun to a more casual ceremony or reception. Once you've decided what you need, it's time to start looking for someone to write the poem. Ask friends, family or contacts in the wedding service industry. A wedding consultant or coordinator, the manager of the reception site and even the person officiating the marriage can offer suggestions. You can also search online for poetry writers and vendors. Before hiring a composer, be sure ask for sample works and suggestions to enhance your ideas. Also, check if the wedding poet can work within your given budget. Wedding poems can cost $100 or more, depending on the length of the poem and the experience of the poet. The poet should not begin composing the piece until the locations for the wedding and reception have been confirmed. Including references to the site details will bring a more personal element to the poem, so this information should be supplied to the wedding poem composer as soon as possible. It is important to confirm specific wedding rites before proceeding with your plans. Some religious institutions do not allow alterations to the wedding ceremony, such as personally written vows or poetry readings. In this case, the poetry reading should be performed during the reception. The wedding poem must represent the personalities and beliefs of the bride and the groom. If the wedding has a theme, the poem can include those style elements. If the ceremony is to be longer than two hours, do not choose a lengthy poem. Decide whether music will be played while the reading takes place. Don't expect the poet to include every detail into the finished piece, but feel free to provide as many points as possible. Pass along as much information as you can, including the couple's beliefs and interests, the type of ceremony, locations of the ceremony and reception, number of guests and wedding theme. Share a little background information on the person who will be perform the poetry reading. Include a few personal details about the couple or circumstances leading to their union, to allow the composer to make the poem as unique as possible. Be sure to ask for a rough draft of the wedding poem well before the ceremony takes place, so that you can be sure that it will be appropriate for the wedding. Begin working with your composer as soon as the wedding is taking shape. It is best to allow a full year when composing the wedding poem. In doing so, there will be time to allow for edits to the poem if details and circumstances change. The wedding poem may be printed in the program, and a copy should be given to the couple as a keepsake. A beautifully written poem will become a treasured memento for the bridal couple. For this reason, careful thought must be given when choosing or composing the poem, or when selecting the wedding poem writer. Planning a wedding involves so much work and so many details, it's easy to lose sight of the most important element: the romance. Your gift of a personal poetry reading will enhance the beauty of the day, and highlight the love that has brought the couple together. This season if the heat isn't frustrating enough, there is a host of skin and hair problems adding to your woes. The humid, sultry, weather doesn't allow you to wait for time-consuming beauty rituals. It calls for instant pick-me-ups and beauty aids. Indulge in these quickies... BREAK-UP BLUES Your skin is angry and emotional and you don't know how to cool it down. No, a drink won't do, unless it's H2O we're talking. Try this quick home remedy if an attention-seeking zit rears its ugly head. Apply an astringent mud mask; these usually contain clays like bentonite or kaolin that draw out the moisture to make a pimple less 'juicy', especially when rinsed off with really cold water, which constricts tiny blood vessels to minimise the ghastly redness. A pinch of dry, chalky (non-gel) toothpaste, like original Colgate, will also dry out pimples, if you leave it on overnight. You could also wrap an ice cube in tissue paper and hold it to the pimple for a few seconds. Remove and repeat the procedure four or five times. Mix a few drops of honey with 1 tsp of cinnamon powder and lemon juice each to make a paste. Apply and leave on the angry pimple for five minutes and wash off with cold water. BLACK(LIST) THOSE HEADS If it isn't the in-your-face pimples, then it's the slimy blackheads that come unannounced. Although steaming and exfoliation on a daily basis is your best bet, you could try this remedy when in a dire situation. Mix rice powder or almond meal with yoghurt and apply on blackhead-prone areas. Rub gently, in circular motion. Leave on for five minutes and wash off with cold water. Afterwards, mix fresh lemon juice in a cup of boiled milk and wash your face with it. OUT IN THE OPEN? Summer's side effects-open pores and overactive sweat glands. What do you do? Use a facial scrub on the affected area and wash off with water. Then mix oatmeal with egg white and keep on for 5-10 minutes on the open pores. Wash it off when it dries. EXTRA BAGGAGE Lack of fluids and excess of salty foods lead to under-eye bags that look oh-so-awful in the morning. How do you lose them? If you don't have a soothing eye gel waiting for you in the fridge, drink a gigantic glass of water. Then place cool compresses (chamomile tea bags are great and have astringent properties) on your eyes and keep standing-don't lie down-to let gravity accelerate the drainage process. Crank up your circulation with gentle stretches or a few minutes of to redistribute body fluids. And don't fret, the bags will gradually over an hour or two. Keep guzzling that water. BOO THAT BO Tried everything from scented talcs to deos? Try one of these quick remedies. Add a cup of apple cider vinegar or white table vinegar or 4 tbsp of baking soda and a cup of lemon juice to your bathing water. You could also dissolve 1 tsp of alum in your bath water. LIMP, LIFELESS HAIR For your heat-beaten hair, here's a quick-fix solution. Boil used tea leaves in enough water so that, after boiling, you have about four cups of the concoction. Cool and strain the liquid. Add the juice of a lemon to it and use this as a last hair rinse. Another quick emergency treatment when you have no time to shampoo-dab on a little cologne to your hair brush/comb before you run it through your hair. It absorbs summer-induced oils and leaves your hair fragrant. BADLY TANNED? So your sunscreen didn't work, and you are left with a bad, bad tan. Here's what you can do to salvage the situation. A cool milk compress is one of the best remedies for sun tan. Dab your skin with cool whole milk for 20 minutes and then rinse it off with cool water. Better still, rub on some peeled onions for instant relief to sunburnt skin.
