Usually I do not get on a soap box about anything although I may sound like it at times, yet the loss of farm land is serious. Essentially every state is losing farm land. For example, North Carolina's farming has about 17% of the workforce, and contributes about 68 billion dollars to their economy. But in 2004 North Carolina lost 3000 farms, and in 2005 was tied with TN and Fla for farm loss, losing 1000 farms. Even more important is the loss of food production. With immigration, legal and illegal, running rampant, American citizens could one day find that the U.S. cannot supply food for its own people. That would mean dependency on other countries, which is a no- no for any country. What then are the dangers ? Your children and mine could find themselves in a situation where food is either scarcer than now, or so expensive that only basic foods could be purchased. Much land in the west would require billions and billions of dollars for irrigation from sea water, salt water, conversion to water useful for farming. So far government has resisted any real effort to accomplish such a huge task. IF the country found itself dependent on food imports, it could find itself one day cut off from imports. It only takes a word from those countries that supply our food imports. It is obvious from news reports that many people in foreign countries do not like the USA. If their leaders should reach the same idea Americans could be in trouble for food. IF food became scarce and therefore expensive, or just expensive, families may find themselves needing to cut other things like new cars, move to a smaller house, less medical care, and on the list could go. It has been correctly said that an army moves on it belly, here meaning food, and without food that army will soon surrender. It is also true for all Americans. There must be healthy food or Americans will be surrendering to their needs, and the economy would go downhill. Two alternatives present themselves to us. One, purchase 10-15 acres of land, put a reasonable size house on it and at least produce one's own food. But it can produce more. According to work by universities one can produce $100,000 with 25-acres. That kind of effort is a real possibility. But 10-15 acres will also produce a sizeable income. Number two, is for each of us to write our state and federal leaders and insist on their efforts to affect preservation of farmland. If enough of us do that then this is a real possibility also. The efforts of us today needs to be done today. The foregoing is a long term, we hope, worst case scenario, yet it is real to some degree even now. Those 45 and older will not likely see bad food situations. Those under 45, children and grandchildren, could be in for a rough time. North Carolina is working to preserve farming. The nation, as a whole, needs to also. www.geocities.com/mobleria/index.html is Paul's Homepage titled Mobleria-Aim For Life Success. Divorce is like a hurricane, the aftermath can be more devastating then the hurricane itself. After divorce, emotions are a wreck. Where do you begin? What do you do first? Is it really possible to be happy again? It's finally over, now what? Here are 3 tips that will help you begin. First, take time each day to heal. Wounds are deep, confusion can be at an all time high. It's important to take time for, you. Each day have a time where you get alone and grieve, just let it flow. In the beginning, it might be several times a day. It will become less and less. Here is the key, have a time limit, that is vital. Allow 15 minutes or more. Then, when your time is up, do not linger, go about your day. This allows the healing process to flow unhindered. Second, remove unnecessary stress. This may mean moving changing jobs or career. Stress will affect your health and emotions. You do not need it at this time. Exercise will help remove stress from you physically, and that helps. It may also mean you have to not be around people that add stress. You will know what or who you don't need in your life. Find activities that can that can put a smile on your face. Like sports, music, a movie, church, reading. Third, dream again. To many times dreams are put on the back burner. Now is the time to put your dreams on the front burner and hear them sizzle again. It's not too late, as long as you are still breathing. This will absolutely bring healing and help you move forward at warp speed. Maybe you have a dream that has been squashed by others. Now is the time to start moving toward your dream. Believe me, these three tips will heal you and ignite passion for life again. They will help you put one foot in front of the other after the devastation of divorce. I know it's tough, even harder then divorce itself, but today is the best day to begin moving forward. The NEWS report had the story in their sights and they fired - prime time news releases with hourly updates. A hero has fallen - caught with an illegal substance on his person. He pleads with his adoring fans for understanding and a degree of forgiveness - but the hounds have the scent and it's trial by media. No matter that our hero has 'bi-polar disorder' - he has been caught in the ecstasy of the ultimate fantasy - the escape from reality. And in the final expose - he admits that he has been the taker of drugs for a long period of time - 'and so perhaps he enjoyed the habit.' But the really, rare bit of side-light information on this 'social comment,' is that following the news report on 'fortunes fall from grace,' I was treated to a television commercial that gave me some deep insights into the nature of our drug culture. A mother and child were shown - the mother chanting a litany of praise for a particular drug - with which she had absolute certainty that all things in the world would be right for her child should she only trust to the efficacy of this chemical. And so - from cradle to grave - we are nurtured in the belief that it is not only okay to take drugs - but we should; - get to know, Ladies and gentlemen - A rose by any other name is still a rose. I suspect that a statistical comparison between the increase in the use of drugs in our society and the rise in pharmaceutical stocks would allow us to realize a very simple commonality - one which needs no 'ramming home.' The gist of this article is to allow each of us to see how we contribute to the image of drugs in our society. If you are unsure as to where you stand on this comment - go to your 'medicine chest' and consider your commitments and comments to a 'drug-free' game. All the best in making your choices.
