| by: Kirk Bannerman | In the course of my home business coaching activities, I have often found that people head into the startup of their online home based businesses with a wildly unrealistic mindset. Many have been told that they can sign up for a few programs, build a website around them, add a bunch of banners and links onto their site, then sit back and watch the money roll in and never have to work again. There is a misconception that you can come online and set up an Internet based business and be making big money within a few days. This is absolute hogwash and it has not been my experience nor the experience of anyone I have come in contact with through my online business activities. The harsh reality is that there are more people who fail at their home businesses than there are people who actually succeed. Newcomers to the world of online home based business are not usually aware that they may actually have to work harder at their home businesses than they did at their traditional jobs. They are typically not aware of the many hours of marketing time that they will need to put in to be successful. Many people that are new to online marketing also make the mistake of thinking that a single marketing strategy will suffice. Naturally, some avenues will produce better results than others, but I have found the best course of action is to adopt a broad based approach to your online marketing by spreading your time and resources over several different methods. If you are new to Internet marketing, you might be well advised to take a course to find out what is required of you to be successful in an online business. It does not matter what type of business you are starting, if it is online, it must be marketed online, and possibly offline as well. It always amazes me how frequently people that start an online home based business actually believe that they can get rich by doing absolutely nothing, or at least with very little effort. These are otherwise intelligent people. Why would they believe this? My conclusion is that they believe because they want to believe. They believe because they see claims to this effect everyday and everywhere on the Internet. They are told that it is possible. They not only want to believe it, for their own reasons, but they need to believe it. In my opinion, you need to give yourself at least a year to make an online business get some traction and start to generate some meaningful income. The proper mindset is to think long term, not instant gratification. I am always surprised at the number of people who drop out of their online home based business after the first month or two. I ask myself, what do they expect, miracles? You probably wouldn't bail out of offline business after a month so why would you expect an online business to be any different? Aside from the fallacy of instant riches without any effort, the expectation of a free ride is a frequent misconception of many that think they want to start an online home based business. If you're afraid, or unwilling, to invest a little money to start your own business...you are not looking at a home based business...you are looking at a work at home job. If you want to make money online, you must also be willing to invest in yourself. It's as plain and simple as that. If you are like most internet based home business entrepreneurs then marketing your product and driving increasing traffic to your web page is essential to increasing sales. The challenge is to market your products and increase your traffic and to do it affordably or even for free.
Fortunately, this is an option for home based businesses, and all it takes is a little creativity combined with dedication. And for those home based businesses with advertising budgets, there are even more advertising options available. Here are some suggestions that should help your product marketing plan significantly.
One of the best ways to get your web page noticed is by writing and publishing articles. There are hundreds, if not thousands, of ezines and newsletters that are constantly looking for new content. First, you need to find some ezines and newsletters that target your niche market. You can search for them on your favorite search engine by searching for "ezine directories" or "newsletter directories". Then, write an article that can be submitted to a variety of these ezines and online newsletters, just make sure you retain the copyright. You may not think that you have the ability or creativity to write articles, but it can easily be done with a couple hours of effort and some commitment. The key part of marketing your home business is by creating a resource box at the end of your article that contains your URL and some brief information about you and your company. Doing this will get your web page out in the public quickly and will result in many hits and free product marketing.
Another way to market your products is to create a forum on your web page. By doing this, you are getting individuals to talk about products and services offered by your company as well as competitors and other relevant topics. This alone will help your product assuming you are offering top notch quality and customer service. If not, then a forum might not be the best idea for you. In addition, a forum will require a commitment of your time in reviewing the posts to make sure the discussions are kept within the rules. However, for those that are committed to their customers, forums generally create repeat traffic which is important to making sales. This is important because it has been proven that more than 70% of sales are made after the third, fourth or fifth contact. A forum keeps individuals coming back for more and more contact, which means you will sell more products.
Additionally, you should use banners on your own web page as well as others by exchanging links. You should also list your web page with search engines. All of these will help your web page get noticed which means your products and services will get noticed and your home based business will prosper. Remember that the most important factor in product marketing online is URL marketing. You might have the best product for the best price on earth, but if nobody knows how to get to your web site it doesn't matter. Therefore, be diligent about getting your URL out there.
Finally, market your product and URL offline. This will reach a different sector of individuals and will also increase web page traffic. Make sure your URL is printed on any correspondence from your company including checks, faxes, web pages, emails, and letters, envelopes, and any promotional items like key chains, mouse pads and the like. The more people that know your URL means more traffic to your site. This in itself is the best product marketing you can receive. | by: Dean Phillips | Thinking about starting a home business? Do you already own a home business but need cash? Perhaps you can qualify for a small business loan. However, before you attempt to borrow any money, you first have to figure out how much money you need. The easiest way to do this is by putting together a business plan. A good business plan is critical to your business success. It can be a simple one page outline or it can be many pages, but it should spell out exactly how much money is needed and what it will be used for; your potential market and customers and potential for growth; what makes your business unique from others; and a rational and conservative projection of your business's cash flow. Your plan will also help you set business goals and define the steps necessary to help you reach those goals. It is a guide for you to refer to on a regular basis to help evaluate your business progress and help keep you focused on your priorities. Besides, a business plan is almost always required when applying for a bank loan. If you need assistance in writing a business plan, your local library should have several books on the subject. You can also try Amazon.com. In addition, you should be able to get help on writing a business plan from one or more of the sources listed below: 1. The Small Business Administration (SBA) offers numerous loan programs to assist small businesses. It is important to note, however, that the SBA is primarily a guarantor of loans made by private and other institutions. http://www.sba.gov 2. The Service Corps of Retired Executives (SCORE) is a volunteer management assistance program of the SBA that provides one-on-one counseling, workshops, and seminars. SCORE has chapters throughout the country. Many work in conjunction with local Chambers of Commerce. SCORE and Visa have also joined forces to help home-based and small business owners. Contact your SBA office, local Chamber of Commerce, or the following websites for more information: http://www.score.org http://www.visa.com/smallbiz 3. Talk to your local bank. Find out what they require for a business loan application and also if they are participants in the SBA loan programs. Be diligent and shop around for the best loan packages, and make sure you fully understand the terms. 4. You may be able to borrow from insurance policies, IRAs, 401k's, stocks and securities, etc. Check with your insurance agent. Also, investigate what the policies are regarding borrowing from your mutual funds or retirement account. Before borrowing, make sure you fully understand the pay-back terms and any potential penalties. 5. Apply for a home equity loan. Borrowing against the equity on your home is permitted in all states except Texas. Just make sure you're diligent about paying back the loan or you could end up losing your home. 6. If you're a woman, you may be eligible for a Specialty Loan. These types of loans are now being offered by local banks. Who knows? Filling out a one-page application just might get you an unsecured credit line or loan ranging from $2500 to $50,000. 7. Try borrowing from family members and/or relatives. If you have a good relationship with your family, perhaps you can make a persuasive argument for them to loan you money for your home business. Just remember, borrowing from family or relatives shouldn't be treated any differently than borrowing from a bank. It's just as important to pay them back on time as well. The U.S economy continues to grow and corporations are enjoying large profits, but the majority of Americans still struggle with finances. This is one of the main reasons many people are looking into the benefits that a home-based business can offer. There is no stressful morning commute, extremely low overhead, fewer restrictions, and few or no employees. Many laws don't apply to small businesses with no employees or only a small number of employees. It has been estimated that 95% of home based businesses are successful their first year with an average income of over $50,000. The general benefits of starting a home based business are many when you consider the tax advantages, money making potential, and savings on transportation and clothing. Small businesses, including home-based businesses, receive numerous tax advantages. They can deduct their home, spouse and children (if you employ them), business vacations, cars, and business meals. You can even set up a pension plan while operating a home-based business. In addition, any losses you incur can be tax deductible and may even be refunded by the IRS, depending on your particular circumstances. To make your home-based business a success, you need to determine the factors that make one business succeed and another identical business to fail. Taking the incorrect actions can mean a failed home based business. Wanting the benefits of a home based business but taking no action at all surely means failure as well. The fact is, most people who start a home business do so without the proper knowledge. The need for a continued cash flow forces them to quit before they can acquire that knowledge. The best way to succeed in your home-based business venture is to benefit from the experience of others. This is much easier than trying to learn the hard way and then giving up in frustration. Starting a home-based business is an excellent financial opportunity. The tax benefits alone can make starting a business from your home the best financial move you'll ever make. The degree of success you have in your business is directly related to the amount of pleasure you get out of the business and the amount of work you put into it. Choose a home-based business that you enjoy, that you can comfortably finance, and a business in which there is a large market in need of your service or product. Will your business require you to invite clients to your home? Do you need extra insurance coverage to operate a business from home? Will you need an extra office or workspace to conduct your business? What about a second phone line, fax, or Internet connection? Some research and planning done ahead of time can save you time and money after your business is established. The benefits of starting a home based business are many, but be sure you have the time and energy to devote to your business so that you'll enjoy the financial and personal freedom you are searching for. Keep in mind that you may have expenses for bookkeeping unless you plan to keep your books yourself. Keeping accurate, up-to-date records is critical in operating a successful business. With adequate research, common sense, and a passion for your job, you can enjoy the many benefits and potential profits owning a home-based business brings. Remember the day when you made the ultimate decision to change your life? Yes, it was the day when you decided to start your own home business. Gosh, I remember the anxiety when I uploaded my very first web site, waiting for something to happen. It’s like going onto a stage and performing in front of a large crowd.
Ok, what has this to do with affiliate programs and how to make money with them? Not much other than this is the primary reason why people spending money online. Emotions are the number one selling factor, period. And newbie web masters are loaded with emotions.
When you started your home business, did you have a product to sell? Neither did I. That’s why affiliate programs are perfect for startup home businesses. In a nutshell, an affiliate sells products from somebody else and keeps a commission from each sale. An affiliate id responsible for all the advertising and only gets paid whenever there’s a sale.
Take a break and think about this for a minute. Every day there are thousands of people online, searching for products and ideas to make money with. They know that there’s big money to make and they are eager to get started. When you started your home business it probably never crossed your mind to sell your own products and to run your own affiliate program.
If you’re in the online business for a while with mediocre results it is time to switch sides. Why should you carry most of the risk with your advertisement spending with less than satisfactory sales results? Not to mention that you’re at the mercy of somebody else’s reliability to send you your hard earned money.
If you don’t have a product to sell, go out there and search for products with master resale rights. This will grant you the exclusive rights to sell the product and keep 100% of the profits. Selling the product through affiliates doesn’t violate this, because you’re paying your affiliates for the advertising efforts, the final sale is still made by you.
Of course there are a million products with master resale rights available. Choose your product wisely. You don’t want to start an affiliate program with products that are already over marketed and maybe available for free or as part of a bonus package. This takes some time and research, but it is well worth the effort.
One source is to research the public domain sector and compile your own information product. There are numerous publications available on this topic. Another source is to join a membership program that sells master resale rights products. Make sure that they offer unique products and check their rules. Many offer a trial membership, take advantage of this.
Once you have your product start your affiliate program. Don’t join one of the many services that offer affiliate program services for a monthly fee. Here’s why. Having thousands of affiliates advertising your product is a great thing. Having thousands of free links to your web site is priceless.
Create as many advertising samples for your affiliates as possible. Have these samples point to different entry points to your web site. Banners are the worst advertising tools, but newbie web masters love them. They are easy to implement. What do you care, you got your free link to your website. Make sure that you use search engine friendly affiliate links. Affiliate links with a “?” are recognized as such. Better are the affiliate links that look like a directory structure. The easy way to implement this is to use PHP as your language of choice.
Guess what will happen after a few months running your own affiliate program from your website? Your own web site will skyrocket in rankings on any search engine, because you got so many links to your web site without having a link farm on your own. This is every web masters dream. Now you have a choice. You either aggressively promote your affiliate program or you promote your products. Either way you win.
If you’re still skeptical, go to Google or Yahoo and search for links pointing to your favorite affiliate program. Simply type ‘links:’ and your affiliate program’s domain name into the search field. Make sure you don’t have any blanks. This will return all the websites that are linking back to this affiliate program. Check out the number on the right upper corner where it says ‘Results 1 – 10 of about x’. x stands for the total number of links. Now do the same for your website. Hmm, you got nothing? Well, that’s the difference. I hope you see the power of this by now.
Before you go out there and slab together your own affiliate program. Do your homework and research as much as possible. You want to get it right the first time.
