Family Guy is guaranteed hilarity every time you watch it. It mixes political satire, current events and highbrow references with immature “toilet” humor to create a potent concoction of fun and laughs. Family Guy is the kind of show that you can watch over and over again, for hours at a time.

 
Indeed, many people feel the same way as the DVD sales for the Family Guy series have always been fantastic, and in some ways helped to spur on the movement of putting television series on DVD sets. Family Guy was created in 1999 by Seth MacFarlane (who has since gone on to create another Fox animated series, American Dad!) and was subsequently canceled in 2000, and again in 2002. These cancellations were due in part to criticisms of the vulgarity of the show as well as overall low ratings. Family Guy is many things but being politically correct is not one of them.

 
However, it was those DVD sales and the cult following that Family Guy had attained that revived the show. The show was brought back for good in 2005 and Family Guy’s popularity has continued to spread as viewers find themselves laughing and quoting the lovable and unique characters from the show.

 
Peter Griffin is the main character of Family Guy. He is the fat, obnoxious father of a family with three children, and one dog. That one dog, Brian, walks upright, can speak, is highly intelligent and loves to drink as well. The baby of the family, Stewie, is one of the favorite characters on the show. The baby is bent on world domination and killing his mother, Lois. He can also speak, although the show pokes fun at itself and whether or not the other characters can actually hear and understand him. Middle child Meg is constantly abused and made fun of and oldest son Chris is socially awkward and overweight like Peter.

 
Other characters include Peter’s crew of friends, Quagmire (a sexual deviant), Cleveland and Joe (a cop in a wheelchair). The local news team is full of stereotypical newscast members. There is a slew of other hilarious characters, including an evil monkey and Mayor Adam West, who is actually voiced by Adam West. Many of the other characters are voiced by the show’s creator, Seth MacFarlane. These include Peter Griffin, Brian Griffin, Stewie Griffin and Quagmire. Peter stands out for his intense Boston-New England accent and Quagmire for his catchphrases “Giggity giggity giggity” and “Alllriiight”.

 
Critics have always been mixed on Family Guy. For some, the show will always be too vulgar and too politically incorrect. For others, it is the perfect willing-to-go-anywhere comedy. Donald Liebenson of The Chicago Tribune says that Family Guy “dazzles with inspired animation” and “leaves you laughing too hard” to prove creator Seth MacFarlane’s boasts of all-time hilarity wrong. If you’re willing to laugh at society and its “PC” standards (and anything else you can imagine from the gross to the obscure to the insane) than Family Guy will be the perfect watch.

For those who are familiar with it, Buffy the Vampire Slayer (abbreviated B:tVS among fans) is a show that encompasses all of the things that a good television show should.  Not only does it have an excellent plot and a fascinating storyline, it has likable characters, villains who are more than 2D caricatures of evil, and the snappy dialog that fans have come to expect from noted writer-director Joss Whedon.  This was the television show that first brought Whedon to a wide audience, and it taught his fans to expect nothing but the best!

 
Buffy: the Vampire Slayer followed the trials of a young Californian girl who finds that her destiny is to be the Slayer, a human who is gifted with super strength and speed and who has been charged with protecting humans from the depredations of vampires, monsters and other evils.  This show was written and directed by Joss Whedon and ran for an impressive seven seasons, garnering many awards and beginning film careers for many of the actors.

 
Heading up the talented cast is Sarah Michelle Gellar, who plays Buffy Summers.  Buffy was content to be a cheerleader and average teen until she became the Slayer and found that her duties involved risking her life on a nightly basis for the salvation of humanity.  Buffy is guided on her mission by her Watcher, Rupert Giles, the librarian of her high school who also happens to be part of a secret society of men and women who study the supernatural and support the Slayer.  She can also count on her best friend Willow, played with charm and grace by Alyson Hannigan, to ground her and support her, as well as the clumsy but well-meaning Xander Harris, as portrayed by Nicholas Brendan.  Rounding out the cast is Seth Green, playing the laid-back werewolf Oz, and David Boreanaz, who plays the mysterious vampire Angel.

 
Throughout its seven seasons on the air, Buffy: the Vampire Slayer had its young heroine facing off against everything from tap-dancing demons, possessed puppets, ancient evils and even Dracula himself.  Throughout the show, not only were evils dealt with, but identities were faced, lives were called into question and characters, grew, changed and developed.  Time Magazine refers to the reality of the show by stating that “the demons and ghouls were comically rubber-faced, but Buffy's spirit was achingly real,” while The Washington Post cited the show as “influential.”  With a strong young female protagonist and excellent plotting and direction, it is easy to see why this show still has all seven seasons available in DVD and continues to exist in a comic book form!

Rome, the HBO Original Series

When most people think of the Roman Empire, they remember boring lectures about stark white columns, flowery orations, and maybe a few gladiatorial fights. If this is what you expect from HBO’s series Rome, you will be surprised to see the brightly colored clothing, muddy streets, crowded markets, and wanton debauchery of every social class imaginable. The series is less a lesson in history than it is a picture of the everyday life of the Romans, from senators, to slaves, to soldiers, and to the social elite. 

Created by Bruno Heller, Rome was originally conceived as one season detailing the rise and fall of Julius Caesar. The story, however, is mainly seen through the eyes of two of his foot soldiers. Vorenus and Pollo’s life stories are just as complex and appealing as those of the social elite that they fight for and occasionally encounter in other settings. While political families vie for power and scandal arises on a constant basis, the story still centers on Caesar. Although the citizens adore him, the senators see him as a threat and act to remove him by assassinating him on the Senate floor. This is where season one ends. But due to high viewership and demand, HBO renewed Rome for a second season. Picking up where it left off, the families of the Julii and the Junii vie for power and use everything from religious rites, to social scandal, to poison and torture to secure their positions. Vorenus and Pollo’s stories continue as well, and once again they find themselves being used by people in power. Meanwhile, Caesar’s nephew Octavian has risen to the Senate while Mark Antony, once an ally of the Julii family, has tried to seize power for himself. After having been exiled to govern Egypt, Mark Antony falls under the influence of Cleopatra and her opium induced escapades. Together, they plan war on Octavian. But as Octavian, now calling himself Augustus, closes in on them in a pre-emptive strike, they both take their own lives. Augustus is named emperor, and once again the Julian family has risen along with him. 

Rome is comprised of an ensemble cast, however, there are some key players in the series. Julius Caesar is played by Ciaran Hinds. The two soldiers, Vorenus and Pollo, are played by Kevin McKidd and Ray Stevenson. The Julian and Junian matriarchs, Atii and Servilia, are played by Polly Walker and Lindsay Duncan. Atii’s children, Octavia and Octavian (later Augustus) are played by Kerry Condon, Max Pirkis (season one), and Simon Woods (season two). Servilia’s son, Brutus, is played by Tobias Menzies. Mark Antony is played by James Purefoy. 

Maureen Ryan of the Chicago Tribune said of Rome: “Though every detail of this lush Roman epic feels palpably authentic, history lessons don’t loom overly large; what’s most enjoyable about it is how deftly it mixes soap opera with senatorial debates.” Rome received seven Emmy awards, including Outstanding Art Direction, Outstanding Costumes, Outstanding Hairstyling, Outstanding Special Visual Effects and Outstanding Cinematography.
