Mesothelioma Sarcoma by Kirsten Hawkins
What Is Mesothelioma Sarcoma? Between the two forms of tumors of the mesothelioma, which are either benign (non-cancerous) or malignant (cancerous), the latter is more common and dangerous, popularly known as mesothelioma. Mesothelioma is characterized by its dangerous potential to spread to other parts of the body. Types of Mesothelioma There are three different types of Mesothelioma: 1) Ephitheliod: It affects the membranous tissue covering the internal organs and surfaces of the body. Though majority of the mesothelioma cases occurring today belong to this type, it has the best prognosis (outlook for survival or treatment). 2) Sarcomatoid: It is also known as mesothelioma sarcoma. It arises from supportive tissues such as bones, muscles, cartilages and fats. About 7% to 20% of mesothelioma cases are of this type. 3) Mixed/Biphasic: 20% to 35% of mesothelioma cases belong to this type. It carries both the features of the above two types. The treatment options remain the same for all the types. Physical Aspects of Mesothelioma Mesothelioma arising from the chest cavity are known as pleural mesothelioma and amounts to an approximate three fourths of the total cases. Peritoneal mesothelioma, which starts and spreads in the abdomen, constitutes 10% to 20% mesothelioma cases. Mesothelioma affecting the covering of the testicles, which is in fact an out- pouching of peritoneum into the scrotum, is rather uncommon. Cases of Pericardial Mesothelioma that starts in the cavities of the heart are also very rare. Mesothelioma and the Masses New cases of mesothelioma, even though they are less common, amount from 2000 to 3000 every year only in the United States. Most of the patients diagnosed with mesothelioma are from the age group of 50 years and above with majority being the people in the seventies. This is primarily due to their exposure to asbestos in the 1940s and 1950s or even earlier. Exposure victims of later year’s i.e.1970s and 1980s are yet to be diagnosed. Men are more susceptible than females with male victims constituting 3 to 5 times higher in numbers than females. This is probably because during that period women liberation movements were started, which resulted into barring them from construction works. On the racial parameters, it is more common among the Caucasians than African Americans. Even though mesothelioma sarcoma cases are rare, they are extremely dangerous. People diagnosed with the disease are mostly in their last and critical stages, making their treatment more difficult in comparison to other forms of cancer. The survival time ranges from one to two years. With unparallel advancements in modern science and medical technology, chances of mesothelioma treatment and recovery have always been increasing. The good news is that the patients suffering from mesothelioma sarcoma can file lawsuits for seeking compensation against the companies responsible for asbestos exposure. Your Metabolism And Fat Loss by Anthony Ellis
If you know someone that has been trying to lose weight and get into shape, you have probably heard words such as, 'I just eat one meal a day to lose weight' or 'I'm afraid if I eat, I'll gain weight' but sadly, this misnomer is why so many people are in the 'battle of the bulge'. People all over the world still believe that eating breakfast, or even three meals a day will cause them to gain weight. In truth, as long as they are eating the right types of foods and exercising, then three normal meals or six small meals a day will actually work better with their metabolism than eating the wrong quantities or not eating often enough. With more than half of Americans over the age of 20 now being considered 'overweight', now more than ever, we need to understand how metabolism works in relation to losing weight. Why risk having a heart attack, a stroke, developing cancer, or diabetes when all you have to do is make a few minor changes and live a healthy life? First, a person's metabolic rate is determined by the number and size of respiring cells that compromise the body's tissue, and the intensity of the metabolism in these cells. These two factors combined are what makeup the physiological foundation of the amount of energy (calories) in which a body uses. Keep in mind that energy cannot be created or destroyed, just changed. As we know, potential energy comes from the foods we eat. When talking about weight loss, there are three components of balanced energy, which include calorie intake, calories stored, and calories expended. The way it works is that if the amount of calories taken in equals the amount of calories being expended (burned), then there is balance and the body's weight is stable. On the other hand, if the balance becomes positive, caused by more food being eaten than is burned, energy is destroyed or in better terms, stored as body fat. It is important to remember that you can be eating a diet considered low-fat and still gain weight. The reason is that most dietary fat is stored while the body is burning carbohydrates and proteins for energy. The problem is the when a person gains weight, the increased level of fat becomes stored energy until the calorie balance is negative. For that to happen, the amount of calories burned needs to exceed the number of calories being consumed, no matter what the macronutrient content. Metabolism is the rate at which the body uses energy to support the basic functions essential to sustain life. This metabolism is comprised of three parts, which include physical activity (20%), Thermic Effect of Food, also called TEF (10%), and Resting Metabolism Rate or REM (70%). Physical activity is the amount of energy your body burns up during normal, daily activities to include housework, recreation, work, exercise, and so on. Obviously, someone that is physically active will burn more energy than a sedentary person will. TEF accounts for the energy used in digesting and absorbing nutrients, which would vary depending on the meal's composition. When a person overeats, TEF is increased because more food must be digested. Here is where metabolism becomes very interesting and what causes so much confusion. One pound is equal to 3,500 calories, so let us say a person consumes 3,500 more calories than normal. That individual would not gain one pound because the TED is accounted for but if 3,500 calories were cut trying to lose weight, then TEF decreases since there would be fewer nutrients to process. The result is that with energy expenditure would decrease, meaning that the individual would lose less than one pound in weight. In other words, by cutting out too much food, TEF cannot work as it was designed to do. Now keep in mind that you cannot go around eating a bunch of junk food. After all, the calories you do consume need to be healthy foods but what this does mean is that when you do not eat, you are actually working against your body in fighting weight gain, not the other way around. Finally, the RMR refers to the number of calories the body needs to run its essential functions, as well as chemical reactions while in a rested state. This aspect of metabolism accounts for the greatest number of calories burned every day. What happens is that if lean weight should be lost because of increased protein metabolism, then RMR decreases. Typically, you would see this happen when a person goes on a very strict diet. In this situation, the body is forced into a negative nitrogen balance, which means a greater amount of protein is lost than what is replaced because of less protein/energy intake. When this imbalance occurs, there is a gradual loss of lean weight, which then lowers RMR. What happens many times is that dieters will limit the amount of lean weight loss with intense exercise for the muscles to develop a need to maintain more protein. When this happens, the body is forced to use more energy from stored fats. If you want to put your metabolism to work for you, some simple steps can be taken: * By adding a few extra pounds of lean muscle, the metabolic rate can be increased by up to 200% each day * Remember that lean weight can burn as much as 20 times more calories than fat weight * Regular exercise is one of the best ways to boost metabolism * By eating smaller meals and more often, you can boost your metabolism rate While you need to eat healthy foods, studies prove that what matters most is how much of a person's body weight is attributed to fat. Remember, excess fat is what links to major health problems. Therefore, it is important that you maintain a healthy weight but more crucial that you monitor the fat-to-muscle ratio. For example, a woman standing 5'5' might weigh only 125 pounds but have a 27% body fat ratio, which is not good. This individual worked hard to diet, while staying involved with aerobics. However, much of what she lost was not fat, but muscle. Even though this weight would be considered ideal for her height, her body fat to muscle ratio is too high. An excellent way to optimize your fat-to-muscle ratio is by getting involved with weight training in addition to the nutrition and cardio. As you will see with the tools provided at www.comptracker.com, you can analyze the thickness of the subcutaneous fat at various areas of the body. The benefit is that you know exactly what your ratios are so you can achieve a healthy fat-to-muscle ratio as well as body weight. Remember, you are in control and need to make the decision to do something good for yourself. Therefore, now is the time to take that control and fight to live a lean and healthy lifestyle. Rx For a Job Search by CareercoachM
Older Workers Like Work Gee whiz! I never thought I would have to look for a jobagain, but I do. Funny that no one taught or told me that savings don't last forever. I'm in that 'pickle!' Besides savings running out, I feel better working! That idea goes again the grain of American culture. People of a certain age are encouraged to find fun things to do and not work at a job! Work is an American dirty word! But I want to feel productive, make money, be around younger folks and have some fun times at WORK. Heck, I don't have time to think about the culture I live in. I'm older and I need a job! What can I do to find a job to do? Before I get started in looking for a job, I'm just plain scared that no one will hire me. I've heard lots of stories about age discriminationand I don't want to look for a job where someone will tell me that I'm over-qualified, just to get rid of me because I'm old. I know it only takes one employer to hire me, not half a dozen at once, but I may have to see more than I thinkis my share of talking to employers to find something! How can I do this? I think I'd better not think of how hard this is going tobe and concentrate on finding employers who will want to hire me. It only takes one If I let fear take over in the job search because I have grey hair, then I will make my search that much harder & make myself feel useless. I think I need to talk to someone about my plans to find a job. I can talk to Bob, my nephew; Carol, my cousin about what I want to do to find a job. They have always been kind and helpful to me in the past. I'll let them know soon. They also make me feel proud of who I am and of my age. Talking it over is good, but I need direction too about what to do next. Where can I talk to others aboutmy situation? I'll just look n the phone book first. I've found some employment agencies. I know their hours by asking for information on the phone. I'll go to one or two to sign up. I did get to the two employment agencies. They recommended that I take some computer classes, which they offer for a fee. I can't do that asI'm already scared about spending more of my savings. The people at these places didn't seem to have other ways of helping me. The phone book didn't help me much with people or places that might help me find a job. I thinkI'll look in the help wanted columns of my local newspaper to find a job. There must be some jobs that I can do listed in the paper. I'm so confused about reading these ads. Nothing seems to fit me. I've never had much of a work history, just being in & out of seasonal farm work.I never thought it was ecessary to have a CAREER. I barely got out of high school when I had to work. My family just worked at anything that came along. So did I. One of my neighbors mentioned that I should go to WorkSource. I had never heard of this place. I finally went there to find out about what I coulddo to find a job. When I got omeone to help me from there, I was put into a job club for older workers. There were about 12 of us in the jobclub room. Some were older than I & some were younger. The instructor in this job club was one of the employees of this agency. It was sure an eye opener to be in there. I looked at some of the others who were there& compared myself with those who looked older, those who looked younger; those who had a give-up attitude & those who might find something to do. I wanted tobe one of those finding a real job. I decided then & there to get a new haircut, get outmy best clothes to wear & try to lose some weight. That might help in making me look younger than the people in this group. If I can manage to feel betterthen I might have more of a chance to get a job. The instructor in this job club wanted to know whywe were there. Everyone had to tell their story.I couldn't see how that was going to help me at all. I did enjoy listening to some of the others talk about their backgrounds. One was an ex-teacher who thought she knew everything, but still didn'thave a job. The instructor also gave us a packet of material about who else in the community might help me & others find a job. I see now that I can call some others for help. Sure, calling on others for help is good, but I need a job. I didn't think a job search was going to be thishard. I had to muster up the courage to talk to the instructor about how to find a job. She asked me about what my skills are & whatwas I looking for. No one had alked to me aboutskills, I just worked at whatever was out there. She did give me a test to take to find out more about what I wanted to do. It turned out that this test said I would do best in an agriculturalsetting. I had to laugh as I had done farm &cannery work all of my life. She did ask me if I knew what my skills are. After this test I had to take, I was still unsure about what I could do best. So, I decided that since I had done all of this gricultural work, I might do well in a nursery selling plants or some such. I had never had any selling experience but I thought that something might just turn up as a job selling plants was still related to what I'd done in the past. I talked to the instructor again about how I could find a job selling plants in a nursery, just as a hunch again about what I could do. She told me to compose a resume first. A resume would tell an employer some things abut who I was & what I could do. I told her I needed help in making up a resume. I had never needed one. I could understand that a good one might get me a job somewhere or at least get me in to an interview. We did do a resume. I was surprised that after all this time, a resume is just a piece of paper that tells an employer what a worker can do. I like this exercise & it made me feel like a I could do a lot of things. I'm still a little unsure about what my real skills are although I'm good with my hands, I can sort through materials to find the bad stuff and keep up with a cannery line of products on an always moving belt. The next step for me in this job club was to contact an employer. I had ever had to do this much as seasonal work was always there & employers just sent out a call for laborers I was called back year after year until I gave it up. Now with government help and a small pension I can just get by. The savings are being spent, fast. Well, I looked in the phone book again. This time I was looking for places that sold or cultivated plantsfor sale. I didn't care much if I had to learn to sell plants or if I had to care for them. With the help of the others in the job club and my instructor I made some phone calls. I didn't ask for a job on the phone. I made an appointment with the owner or manager to talk about what they did. Even though I was scared to do this, after a few calls, I felt better about calling strangers. I did make two appointments to talk to the day-to-day manager of a wholesale nursery nearby. When I went to the nursery, I was dressed in casual clothing, not anything fancy. I did wear a jacket, though, as I thought that made me look more business like. When I got to this place, I felt awkward until the manager & I started talking about the planting & cultivating of strawberries. I did know about growing strawberries from our own home garden. To my surprise when I was getting ready to leave, the plant manager asked me if I was looking for work. I told him that I was truly interested in seeing firsthand about this strawberry farm, really, not a nursery. Finally, I had the presence of mind to tell him that I was looking for work at some date. He & I made an appointment to have me come in & talk to him & the owner. I was confused then but agreed to come back anyway. After this experience I made up my mind that I wanted to work & working there with my background seemed to be a good fit. I was determined to go back & ask for a job, even though that was not what I thought had happened when I was there. To sum up what I have learned from all of this it is: 1. I have skills I didn't recognize. 2. Potential employers are not 'meanies' who are rude. 3. I now know what a resume is and how one can help or hinder me in the job search. 4. Job hunting is not always a hard or hurtful experience. 5. I feel better about myself in knowing that employers do hire older workers. I think I just found one. Marilyn J. Web Conferencing: The Advantages Of A Browser Based Online Meeting System by Dan Richmond
If you are thinking about getting into web and video conferencing, then it is important to know what is required to operate any proposed conferencing system. Some systems run on proprietary software and need special equipment, while browser based systems usually do not require the installation of special software or equipment. Many organizations and individuals will find browser based solutions easier to use. Here are a few reasons why this is so: 1. They work on all operating systems. Do you have some users on Mac and some on PCs? Do you have some users who have Linux? If you want to connect all of these people together in one conference it may be impossible if you have to install special software to run your conference. In this case a browser based system that can run on all operating systems and all browsers allows you to connect with all of your staff or clientele without any worries about what kind of computer they are operating. 2. You don’t have to download and install software. Sure, people are becoming more computer-literate as time goes on, but downloading and installing software and getting the software to run properly can be an obstacle to some people. The good news is that with many browser based systems there is no software to download, because the installation is done on the technology provider’s host computer. Participating in a conference is as easy as going on line to view a website. 3. People anywhere in the world can go online and join the conference. With no equipment installation and no software installation to take care of, the door is open to widespread participation in your conferences. The only thing that you have to do is to notify your people and provide them with a url and a password and they can join in. 4. There is no problem with firewalls. Most offices and many individuals protect their computers and networks from hackers by using a firewall. This is good for security but can become a problem if you are trying to join people together in a conference. Many web and browser based systems are not affected by firewalls and no special instructions have to be given to conference participants whose computers may be protected by firewalls. All of these factors add up to one very strong advantage of using browser based conferencing systems: they allow you to get maximum participation in your online events. With little or no technical obstacles, such systems make it easy for large numbers of people, using diverse equipment and with varying degrees of computer skills, to take part in online meetings. So, take a look at the various conferencing packages on the market at the present time and pick out one that is both easy to use and powerful enough to meet your communications needs. THE 'MAGIC' OF THE RIGHT FOREARM by Chuck Evans
'In essence, bending and straightening the Right Elbow will raise and lower the left arm and/or cock and uncock the left wrist without bending, flattening, or cocking the right wrist. Right elbow action either powers and/or controls all three elements of the Three Dimensional Impact, (downward, outward, and forward).' Homer Kelley But when combined with the bending backward of the right wrist the clubshaft and right forearm fall into line with one another. This is absolutely crucial in delivering a fully supported club into the ball. 'With this 'inline' relationship of loading the club and Right Forearm it is mandatory that Hitting or Swinging it is the Right Forearm - not just the right hand and/or clubshaft - that must be thrown, driven, into Impact. Always, for all procedures, the Right Forearm is positioned 'on Plane' - pointing at the Plane Line as the Angle of Attack.' Homer Kelley 'The On Plane Right Forearm shows the precise up-and-down direction it and the Clubshaft must make throughout the Stroke. The 'Angle of Approach' position of the Right Forearm show the precise Cross-Line direction the Forearm must take through Impact. So the Right Forearm must leave - and precisely return - to its own Fix Position.' - Homer Kelley For a drill, take a club in your right hand and hold it horizontal to the ground. Now lower the Right Forearm and clubshaft to a table top. You'll see that both the Right Forearm and clubshaft are in one line. Now move the Right forearm back and forth making sure that it does not leave the table. This is called Right Forearm tracing. Now bend the right wrist backward and you'll notice that the clubshaft and Right Forearm are once again in line but this time they form a 'wedge'. Move this assembly back and forth on the table. You now have a precision assembly and the Right Forearm Flying Wedge. The goal with this drill is to make you aware of what the Right Forearm and clubshaft should do during the stroke. When the clubshaft and Right Forearm are in the same alignment you have a positive force into Impact, lag pressure, and a sound that is unmistakable!
