You may know him for one of his famous later movies like Mr. & Mrs. Smith. You might even know him for a spoof of one of his movies like High Anxiety. However, if you are a fan of dramatic movies, you owe a lot to Alfred Hitchcock.

Alfred Hitchcock first found work as a draftsman and a designer of advertisements. Due to his aptitude and interest in movies, he was a success designing title cards for silent movies.

Alfred Hitchcock wrote silent movies like Appearances and Tell Your Children in Great Britain and Germany prior to him being a director. In 1925, at last, he had the opportunity to direct The Pleasure Garden. He directed other silent movies after that. It was promptly obvious that he could tell a story with a camera like no one else.

Some of his earlier works, unfortunately, have been lost completely or there are only parts of them known to remain.

Once spoken word was added to movies, his dialog added yet more suspense to his rich films. Many of his earlier films were produced in Britain. Once these talkies found commercial success, he gained access to more resources so that he could improve his movie making even more.

Perhaps Alfred Hitchcock is known best to the current generation for the remakes of his films. Several of the films from the latter portion of his career have been remade into box office sensations.

If you get the chance to watch one of Hitchcock's films, be sure to watch for him. He often made cameo appearances of some type in his films. Here are a few examples:

* Family Plot made in 1976 where he is seen in silhouette through the door of the Registrar of Births and Deaths

* To Catch a Thief made in 1955 where he is seen sitting to the left of Cary Grant on the bus

* Mr & Mrs Smith made in 1941 where he is seen passing Robert Montgomery in front of his building
