House boat of Kerala

Kerala’s one of the attraction is the houseboats.This is a huge, slow-moving, exotic barges used for leisure trips. They are a reworked model of Kettuvallams. Kettuvallam was a boat to transport rice and spices in earlier time from inland to the ports of Kerala. It can transport about 40 Metric Tonnes of goods at a time. Now trucks taken away this place. These now converted in to posh accommodation for tourists inland. The popularity of Kettuvallams has returned in the function as major tourist attractions. Such a houseboat is about 60 to 2om long and about about 5 m wide at the middle. The hull is made of wooden planks.That are held together by ropes of coconut fiber; the usual wood is 'Anjili'. The roof is made of bamboo poles and palm leaves. The exterior of the boat is painted with protective coats of cashew nut oil. These boats contains fully air conditioned bedrooms, hall, toilet and kitchen. It is very fantastic experience to stay and dine in this .Motorized and non motorized boat are available.
