Located in West Africa, on the Gulf of Guinea, Ivory Coast, is surrounded by Liberia, Guinea, Mali, Burkina-Faso and Ghana. 15,446,231 people (in 1998) occupy 322 462 km2 constituting its territory. French colony, Ivory Coast became independent on August 7, 1960; it is a republic, directed by a democratic government. The political capital is Yamoussoukro but the economic capital remains Abidjan. Colonial time, Ivory Coast preserved French become the official language as well as the systems administrative, legal and educational.
