Profile of Comedian Carlos Mencia
Carlos Mencia is the stage name of Ned Arnel Mencia. Carlos was born on October 22, 1967 in San Pedro Sula, Honduras. He was the 17th of 18th children born to a Honduran father and a Mexican mother. He was raised in East Los Angeles, California. After High School, he attended California State University in Los Angeles where he majored in electrical engineering. While still in college, Carlos performed at an open mic night at a popular LA comedy venue called The Laugh Factory. After about three minute, he drew a complete blank. He told the audience that he had no more material and turned and walked off the stage. The management and the audience thought it had been part of his act and responded favorably to the performance. Encouraged by this experience, Carlos left school early and began a career in stand up comedy in the Los Angeles area. In 1994, he was chosen to host HBO?s Latino comedy show known as ?Loco Slam?. In 2000, he branched out into acting. He won roles in the television shows ?Moesha? and ?The Shield?. In 2004, Comedy Central began talking with Mencia about a possible show. At around the time that Dave Chappell left his highly popular show before the start of its third season, Comedy Central signed Carlos to a contract for a half hour comedy show called ?The Mind of Mencia?. The show used the same format of ?The Chappell Show?, which was a mix of stand up and sketch comedy. ?The Mind of Mencia? enjoyed some moderate success in its first season, but became Comedy Central?s second highest rating show during its second season. The comedy style of Carlos Mencia can be best described as controversial comedy. Many comedians make use of race and racial stereotypes in their routines, but Carlos is the master of this form. He targets liberal and politically correct issues without mercy. One of his trademark routines pokes fun at people with mental disabilities, although he defends this action by claiming that he is not speaking of people who are born retarded, but are born and then become retarded. Like most controversial comedians, Carlos is the target of criticism. He has been accused of plagiarism and has not always been well received in critical reviews. His show continues to be highly rated, however, and his live performances are generally well received. Carlos defends his comedy by saying that it is intended to be funny and not controversial. He claims the idea is to relax racial tension by teaching us to laugh at ourselves. Recently, he appeared in one of the top rated commercials during the Super Bowl, and his show is beginning its third season. Carlos Mencia is a comedian that will be part of the comedy scene for many years to come. Joseph Pare is with FunnyQuotesDaily.com - providing free daily funny quotes.
