Round Diamond, Princess Diamond, Pear Diamond - What shape is the best for an engagement ring? Round Diamond, Princess Diamond, Pear Diamond - What shape is the best for an engagement ring? by Tom Mason

I'm jealous of you. That might sound weird, but you are probably reading this because you are shopping for a diamond. It's a fun time - I get a big rush from it.

Now if you are just starting you 'diamond hunt', you might be a little confused with the different information out there. Hey, most guys have never bought a diamond before so it's normal you don't know too much about it. But hopefully I can make it a little easier.

I'm going to look briefly at the different shapes diamonds come in. This is one of the first things you have to decide on when picking out an engagement ring (or any diamond jewelry for that matter).

The most popular choice (and the most widely available shape) is the round diamond - often referred to as a 'round brilliant' diamond. Simply put, the diamond is round.

The round brilliant diamond is easily the favorite among the ladies and for good reason. This shape allows for the most 'brilliance' in a diamond - the way it is cut makes for the most light return. This is what gives the diamond it's sparkle and fire. It's an elegant and classic shape that will never go out of style. It is my first recommendation for guys who are shopping for an engagement ring.

Princess cut diamonds are the next most popular. These are square in shape. Although the way the diamond is cut doesn't quite give off as much sparkle as a round diamond, it isn't all that far off. I have seen some stunning princess diamonds - however they can be a little tougher to find. GIA (the leader in diamond certification and reports) does not offer cut gradings for diamonds that are not round, so determining how well the diamond is cut can be a little tricky.

From time to time other shapes become popular. Often this is because of a celebrity or fashion trend. When Jessica Simpson started wearing her pear-shaped diamond ring, this shape of diamond experienced a surge in sales.

It' s a good idea to try to find out if your special someone has a preference in shapes. If you are trying to keep things secret, have a friend of hers find out for you. Obviously you want to get her the diamond ring she has always dreamed of.

I will say this - of all the girls I have spoken to, I have never met one that didn't love a round brilliant diamond. Even if they might like the look of a particular shape, every woman I have spoken with stated they would be happy to own a round brilliant. This is another reason why I recommend sticking with this shape unless you have a specific reason to look for a different shape.

I put together a guide that you can find at my website that covers the diamond buying process in full detail - I hope it helps. My main goal is to show you how to save tons of cash on this purchase, but I also focus on how to find the highest quality diamond (girls want to see that bad boy sparkle!). Have a look.

Try to have fun with this purchase. It's an exciting time in your life - enjoy it!

All the best!
