Is Minoxidil a hair loss cure?
Minoxidil is one of just two FDA-approved hair loss treatments. It's FDA approval means it works, and it's safe.
Interestingly, no-one quite knows how it works. It's applied as a cream or lotion and stimulates the circulation, we know that, but other circulation stimulants don't encourage hair growth so there's something else going on.
Getting the right dosage is important to the outcome, which is one reason why it's a good idea to use Minoxidil under professional supervision, so the dosage may be chosen based on experience. Otherwise you might try it at the wrong dose and decide it doesn't work, which would be a pity if using the right dose would work.
A professional hair specialist is called a trichologist, and at The Belgravia Centre they recommend either a mild 4% Minoxidil lotion, a stronger 5% Regain lotion, or an extra-strength 12.5% cream.
On prescription, booster compounds can be added to Minoxidil to make it more effective, Medroxyprogesterone (MPG) for instance. Apart from lowering the price of hair loss treatments, that's another reason the Belgravia Centre has its own pharmacy, so it can offer such combinations. Another addition is Azelaic Acid (AA).
The possible side effects of Minoxidil are minor and affect fewer than one percent of users. Issues such as mild facial hair growth, headaches, rashes and palpitations either go away on their own or after cessation of treatment. This is, however, why it's good practice (especially with stronger doses) to take Minoxidil as part of a professional treatment regime.
To summarise: the most effective way to treat hair loss is to attack the problem on a number of fronts using the best, scientifically proven treatments available under the guidance and judgment of an experienced, professional trichologist. They can offer drug combinations on prescription that aren't available over the counter along with effective monitoring to check progress and adjust treatment accordingly.
