Maxfield Parrish: Illustrator Of The Golden Age
Posted in: art in MysticBren's Blog

Maxfield Parrish was considered in his era of the early 20th century, as one of the greatest of the Golden Age of Illustration.

However his work goes far beyond what can only be described as magical.

Although these images were originally intended for illustrations, Parrish painted them on full sized canvases and even painted several murals.  The first image, Daybreak, is one of his murals.

The orange and purple cast to the shadows, the sunlight in the background and the flowing robes and fantastical fluttering of material are the trademark of his unique style.

If you look closely at the bottom right hand corner of the painting below and then in the painting above, you will see the rock formations of the Garden of the Gods in Colorado Springs, which sit at the base of the Rocky Mountain range in the United States.

These formations are considered Sacred Ground by Native Americans and Parrish used them in several of his paintings.

Maxfield Parrish continued to paint until he was in his 90's and was responsible for a plethora of work ranging from greeting cards, magazine covers, book illustrations, oil paintings and murals and his unique and visionary style helped define the modern era of painting.
