[ Nokia Cell Phone ] Nokia Makes Marketing and Fashion Statement With "Wearable" Cell Phone Author: Stephen Bouvet, Ellen B. Mullally To make sure that the fashion lesson of the multi-colored phone - billed by the company as "the world's most fashionable phone" - was not missed, Nokia hired fashion model Niki Taylor to "wear" the phone and to preside over the event. Taylor also will be featured in the phone's advertising campaign. The AMPS phone replaces the Nokia 232. It should retail from between $100 and $199. The 252 weighs, depending on the battery, 5.2 ounces to 6.2 ounces. It is three-quarters of an inch thick, 1.8 inches wide and 5.7 inches long, including the antenna. It has an LCD screen and many of the features expected in a new handset, including one-touch dialing and call timers. Though the technology is up-to-date, Nokia emphasizes that the 252 is meant to be seen and heard. The somewhat unorthodox launch may become more of a trend in the wireless industry, where lower prices and plans are bringing in more consumers who are paying for, and choosing, what phone they will carry. "The consumers are driving the need for a variety of phones," said Phillip Redman, wireless analyst at the Boston-based Yankee Group. "When subscribers are paying for phones they demand more choice." Redman also said that the trend toward variety also is driven by manufacturer competition. "An important part of gaining market share is putting more value into the phone," he said.
