If your computer is a year old or more the first thing you should do is run the defrag program that Microsoft package with your Windows operating system. It is fair to help your computer runs quicker. As your computer ages and stores more files it begins breaking files into pieces and storing them in various parts of your hard drive. This will make your computer run a whole lot slower. Running the defrag program will enable your computer to gather up these bits and pieces and store them closer to one another. It's quick and it is free.
After you defrag your hard drive, which is as easy as running any other program on your computer, the next thing you want to do is run your disk cleanup utility. This utility also comes along with the Windows operating system and is extremely easy to use. It simply examines your hard drive closely looking for bad sectors that your computer is tripping over and slowing it down. Repairing these bad sectors will make your computer a lot faster.
And then there is the horror story of spyware programs. These are programs that on ethical marketers sneak onto your computer. You might download a nice pretty screen saver picture for your computer and discover that along with installing the new desktop picture that you have also installed one of these evil spyware programs. Please spyware programs will do anything from steal your passwords and pass them back to the owner of the spyware program or just began copying so much information that your computer slows to a crawl. You can download a copy of Microsoft's Internet defender for free or step up your protection a couple of levels by purchasing one of the commercial spyware programs available on the Internet. The $30 or $40 that you spend for a commercial application will likely pay for it self many times over.
you probably need to spend some time removing some of the thousands of files or in your computer that are doing nothing now other than slowing down your hard drive which is another way of saying that they are slowing down your computer. It will definitely be to your advantage to locate and remove programs that you have installed in the past but never seem to use as well as the temporary files that your Internet browser and the Windows operating system store or in your computer. The very existence of these files or near a hard drive slows it down.
Another thing that you can do to make a massive difference in the speed of your computer is not free but it is relatively inexpensive. Check the instruction book that came with your computer and see if it is possible to add additional memory to your computer. I'll most all modern computers do have additional capacity. Just do a little homework on the Internet and you will probably be surprised to find out how quick and easy it is for anyone that can use a screwdriver to add their own memory to their computer. Additional memory will probably cost you in the range of $50-$100 but it will make a tremendous speed difference in your computer.
These have been some of the more common things that you can do to make your computer run faster today. Several of these are routine maintenance of things that you should be going or in a regular basis in order to keep your computer running at its fastest. Do them every week or at least once a month and you will find that one a day to day and month to month basis your computer just runs quicker and keep you happier.
