My Hydrangea's are two different colors....
was out walking around the yard today and noticed not only is one of my Hydrangeas blooming but two are. These bushes are about 3-4 years old and last year was the first year they flowered. Both were blue last year. So of course I was a bit confused when this year one was pink and the other was blue. Hydrangeas change colors with the soil.Their color depends on the acid and ph of the soil. These two bushes are side by side no more than 2 feet apart... ![]() In most species the flowers are white but in some can be blue, red, pink, or purple. In these the exact color often depends on the phof the soil' soils rich in acid produce blue flowers, neutral soils produce very pale cream petals, and alkaline soils results in pink or purple. Hydrangeas are one of very few plants that accumulate aluminium. Aluminium is released from acidic soils, and in some species, forms complexes in the hydrangea flower giving them their blue colour.
So how did I get a pinkish purple flowering hydrangea as pictured above? Right next to it is the blue.....
Both are equally beautiful but how can the soil change be so different when they are right next to each other?
I just thought this was interesting. I hope you enjoyed my beautiful hydrangeas. They are one of my favorite flowers of all times!
