Completion Of The Basement Transformation Completion Of The Basement Transformation by David Faulkner

Completion of the basement area is the best thing you can do to add on to your home with a small amount of money. The cube like arrangement of the wall, flooring, ceiling and the rest, is in place. The only thing needed is to finish them.

The major idea to allow for a cheaper budget is to create a timeline to follow. This allows you a look into what needs to be finished first and also what things have been completed already.

The beginning step is to decide what this area will become. It may be that you want a bedroom, living room, or just a fun room. It is up to you.

When this has been decided, you need to decide how you are going to change the room. The right questions to ask will be decided by where the home is.

Something To Ponder?

1. Heat ? Is there a certain way you are going to heat and cool the basement area? You have many things to choose from like forcing the air, baseboard systems, heated water systems, or gas fireplaces. The basement may not be underground and this provides you with an opportunity to use the existing ducts used on the rest of the house. Your bathroom design can include the use of heated lamps. A method you choose will need to be able to heat and cool the entire basement.

2. Plumbing ? Bathrooms and kitchen designs will need to have drainage and water lines installed. The existing water heater will need to be large enough to stand this load. If it cannot, you need a larger heater.

3. Air Flow ? The for mentioned rooms will need a better flow of air. It will be necessary to provide the correct ventilation for these rooms. For a fireplace, it is also necessary.

4. Smoke Detectors ? These need to be put in the basement especially if you are completing a bedroom.

5. Electric ? Electrical outlets in the wall and new lighting is needed. For a kitchen, ovens and stoves will need special plugs. It might also be necessary to add extra lines to provide the right amount of handling for the wattage it will be carrying. A subpanel might be necessary to hold the increase of electricity.

6. Wetness ? The wetness in the basement may cause you to have to stop. This is an easy thing to control with the use of water blockers and insulation. Condensation on the walls and floor might need something more.

7. Building Development - make sure to fix any water leaks and issues with the area. Provide an airtight seal around windows and outside doors. Seal any cracks in the floor and the concrete walls.

8. Make any changes necessary in the HVAC system.

9. Add drain lines for sinks and toilets. You may have to add these to the flooring. Electrical outlets and conduit boxes may need to go through the floor also. These are used for television, telephones, or cable. Replace and fix the cement of the floor when finished.

10. When adding a fireplace, the hearth and the flue are then in line to be completed. A wood stove does not need a heart to be installed but a flue will need to be added through the wall or ceiling. This will need to be the correct length to be able to attach to the wall or ceiling for security.

11. Air ducts need to be added.

12. Any items for the bath like tubs and showers are the next in line. Provide yourself with a way to add outside lines and nothing else.

13. Sub flooring is next along with a water barrier.

14. Framing the wood or steel around walls and creating walls will be next.

15. Add drains and water pipes to the ceiling and wall.

16. Add ceiling and wall air units. This does not include stove hoods. These need to be done after the cabinets are put in.

17. Add ceiling strapping now.

18. Add light switches and electrical outlets and run the wires to the electric panel. Cable, computer, speaker, and other wires also need to be completed.

19. Add insulation to the wall or ceiling and then a water protection.

20. Put in the drywall for the ceiling and walls. Add paneling to the walls.

21. Paint

22. Add the flooring

23. Put in bathroom lights, cabinets, and any other wall units.

24. Add trim around the doors and windows. Paint them to make sure they are nice.

25. Add ceiling and wall lights, smoke alarms, and trim electrical boxes and air vents.

26. Add the wood burning stove if you are putting one in.

27. Bring in the new furniture.

28. Have a wonderful time in your new basement.
