People are always talking about how 'you need to build backlinks', but what are they and how do they help ?

Well the short answer is this.

Backlinks are simply when other websites link to your website and/or internal pages to your website. They help simply because they show search engines that there is something to look at, and help carry 'weight' to make your site stronger.

Think about your site being a rope tied from the floor to the ceiling, one single rope. But if other site link to it, now think about dozens of ropes tied to that single rope in the middle. Created almost a spider web of ropes all pointing to your one single rope.

Now not all links help. Really ? Yup !

Most backlinks can help somewhat but 'won't carry much weight'. These links are most likely directories, links from un-indexed pages, myspace pages, or un-relevant content backlinks.

Some links will help a lot more, and will show results with in weeks. These links are most likely forums, chat rooms, un-relevant but strong sites, and others.

Then there are the links that can help the most; 'Relevant Content Backlinks', these are links like press releases, article submissions like this, blogs, relevant forums, feeds, places like newsvine, del.icio.us, reddit, and .ingBy.Us are becoming a very popular way to build back-links is building a mini-website, or satellite site to promote your official site. One great example of this is Someth.ingBy.Us where you get your own sub-domain to build a mini-site to advertise and build relevant content backlinks from. Very similar sites like Blogger, Newsvine, offer a sub-domain but not as catchy ;-)

And there are a small amount of links that can hurt you. These are links from banded URL's, spam sites, porn and adult sites can all hinder your rankings. Be careful if companies offer linking services, be careful when companies offer 1,000's of links. These have always been known to use unsafe links. But not all of them research the company and where they will offer the links from.

One other tip would be... 'Slow and steady, always better than fast shirt lived.' If you get 1,000 links in a day it could end up hurting you, (depending on where they come from). But yet 10, 20, 100 every few days over time can help push your site with a better foundation.

Not all links help, but backlinks form sites with 'relevant content' and high PR most certainly help a lot more !
