The Sedentary Lifestyle - Keep the Blubber Off Through Aerobic Exercise The Sedentary Lifestyle - Keep the Blubber Off Through Aerobic Exercise by Julie Russell

The sedentary lifestyle is not limited to lazy people. This term can apply to anyone that has a desk job. If this is you, then you probably understand how difficult it is to lose weight and keep it off.

I used to have a physical job which basically was the equivalent of jogging 2-3 miles a day. I worked out regularly and had a healthy diet. I was 11% body fat.

I have been working from home and sitting behind a desk for over a year. I recently have begun to notice that the body fat is not as low as it once was and I am a bit softer than I should be. I realize that my workouts and diet haven't changed from before, but I sit all day long, now.

Human beings are just not designed for the sedentary lifestyle. Food is fuel for our bodies. When we aren't burning that fuel it will turn to fat. If you eat a large meal before you go to bed, your body will store the extra calories as fat. The same is true for the daytime. You could be eating small healthy meals but you are burning such a low amount of calories that you will be storing more as fat.

Just think about stay at home moms who chase around their kids. I guarantee that, if they are otherwise healthy, they will burn more fat on a daily basis than a person who is just as healthy but sat all day. The same applies to kids. When they are young, they are all over the place. But watch the change from them being physically active to them sitting all day at school.

So, we sit all day and relax all night. No wonder we gain weight. What is the solution?

There is a lot of debate about cardiovascular exercise and whether or not it really burns fat. Many fitness enthusiasts are against cardio. They think that you can just burn calories during your workouts and that's enough. However, it's not enough for the person who sits all day.

While I do agree that aerobic exercise alone gets you nowhere, but when you are eating 5-6 healthy meals a day and doing some kind of strength training regularly and still have that extra fat, you can rest assured that the sedentary days are the cause.

The solution to this is cardio and more cardio. Though, it is by far, not the most important ingredient in a healthy lifestyle, it's important.

For those of us who sit all day: Try getting up and doing 20 minutes of aerobic exercise during the day. It can be biking, running, etc. You may not have the luxury of working from home, so this may be difficult for you. If you cannot afford to do this during the day, do it after work along with your strength training. You will find that you feel more energized and you will be burning off your extra 'fuel'.

I guarantee that within a few weeks you will notice a difference. Though you may not be able to change the fact that you have a job that dictates that you sit all day, you can burn off fat by making the choice to get off your bum and get that heart rate up.
