Where to Find Classic Cars

If you have a certain amount of money in the bank, and a certain understanding of the reasons why cars matter to so many people, it is not uncommon to covet a classic car to put in your driveway (or, should you have the chance, a locked garage). A classic car is as much a status symbol as a boat, a large house or a work of art. Making a classic car one of your priorities entails a certain amount of work to be done in order to find the right one. Different cars appeal to different people, and the wide variation of definitions that qualify as exemplars of the medium means that two people’s ideas of a “classic car” might vary hugely.

There are numerous ways to buy a classic car. How you go about it really is entirely up to you. The most familiar way among the classic car, gear head fraternity is to go to an auction. This is also possibly the best way. Going to an auction allows you to have a look at the car itself. Depending on the nature of the auction you may have an opportunity to see it in action. How much the car’s ability to operate matters to you depends entirely on your own priorities. It is unquestionable, however, that seeing a car “in the flesh” as it were is something that makes a big difference to how much you feel justified in spending on it.

One reason why auctions appeal to so many is that it may allow you to pick up a bargain. As long as you go to the auction with a set price in mind and stick to that price, you could end up with a great car for a reasonable amount of money. Each participant in the auction will have differing opinions on the best car there, and if you are the best bidder on the car of your choice, you should come home happy. Buying from a showroom almost guarantees that you will pay a premium, because of the “take it or leave it” nature of the sale. Buying online from a site such as eBay can work out for you – in some cases leading to an extremely good value purchase – but if you “buy blind” do not be surprised to go to pick it up or take delivery of the car and notice for the first time some imperfections.

The main things to keep in mind when earmarking a classic car for purchase, and identifying the opportunity to purchase it, are as follows:

  • Know before you open your wallet or give your details that the car is as you expect it to be.
  • Shop around. Some people will be selling their car in order to realize a quick lump sum of money, and may go lower on the price to get a sale.
  • If buying online, compare prices in several different places. You would be surprised what savings you can make if you look hard enough.
