Take a Lisbon holiday and find a spectacular, eccentric but peaceful city. Its central squares are tidy and welcoming. The city is a modern labyrinth of streets and 18th-century history. The Alfama district east of Baixa, retains the much of its original layout and atmosphere. Rua de So Pedro turns into a fish market on weekday mornings. Great views of the city can be seen from the Castelo de So Jorge. The castle was built by the Moors on the site of a Roman fort. West of Baixa, the Chiado district bursts with shops, cafes and theatres. The Museu do Chiado gives an idea of modern Portuguese art up to 1950. Next to Chiado, the Bairro Alto district's streets are lined with bars and restaurants. To the west is Sao Bento and the National Assembly, Estrela, with its marbled Basilica, and the Lapa diplomatic district where the Museu de Arte Antiga shows seven centuries of fine art. Downtown, the Avenida da Liberdade, runs north from Praea dos Restauradores, the square next door to the Rossio. Topping the avenue is a roundabout dominated by a grand statue of the Marques de Pombal. For really spectacular views on your Lisbon weekend, take a ferry under the Ponte 25 de Abril bridge on the River Tagus towards the Christ the King statue that looks over the city. Lisbon is superb for food and wine lovers with menus of simple fresh fish dishes. The sardines are big and succulent and Bream and shellfish are plentiful.

SHOPPING

The elegant Chiado district has recently had tasteful redesign and has a number of great shopping opportunities. Baixa has a wider range of shops, Rua Aurea the Street of Gold is the location of the major jewellery shops, Rua da Prata the Street of Silver, and Rua Augusta are Lisbon's three principal shopping streets. The Baixa shopping district lies between the Rossio and the river Tagus. For funkier wares, head to the Bairro Alto, where local designers and specialists work. A more global experience is on offer at the Centro Comercial Mouraria, on Largo Martim Moniz, a chaotic mix of African, Indian and Chinese shops. Antiques lovers gravitate to Rua Dom Pedro V in the Bairro Alto. Other streets with antiques stores include Rua da Mirdia, Rua de Sao Pedro de Alcentara, Rua da Escola Politecnica, and Rua do Alecrim.

NIGHTLIFE

Tourists visit the fish restaurants in Rua das Portas de Santo Antao, north of Rossio. In Bairro Alto, queues form nightly outside grilled-fish specialists. Many of those who take Lisbon holidays come for its nightlife, and in particular that around Bairro Alto. The area is full of choice and its streets remain busy and noisy deep into the night with its fado clubs, traditional, canteen style bars and discos. One of the best clubs in the city is Lux, on the harbourside. Much of the nightlife is now also in the Docks district. One bar after another occupies a row of converted warehouses at the Doca de Santo Amaro, with a crowded promenade and tables outside. Towards the city, the Doca de Alcentara has emerged as the place of choice for Lisbon's richer professionals and the 'in' crowd. At around 2am, many people head to the Lisbon discos, which open until 6am or later. Lisbon also has a thriving African scene.
