Flixya film school; websites for new filmmakers

We get asked all the time whether we have vacancies or work experience available; unfortunately it rarely is, outside of production small film companies like us don't have huge amounts for people to do, which makes it important to connect with as many people as possible if you want to find some work and start building a CV.

One reality check is that you won't get hired to direct a film based on your insistence that you know you can do it; you need to have made some films already and they need to be really good. Most people are smart to start as a runner or production assistant, which basically means you help out everyone and make tea and get to know what a film set is like. It helps a lot getting this work if you have a driving licence and vehicle.

www.shootingpeople.org is an annual fee site (about £30) but well worth it, lots of useful resources and regular postings asking for runners or crewing up zero and low budget short indie films in the Uk and East Coast USA.

www.talentcircle.co.uk is similar to SP but free and focused on the UK only.

www.mandy.com is also free and lists mostly UK jobs of all kinds mostly in broadcast with companies like BBC

These are great places to network, see job ads, and get your career started, check them out if you're finishing film school and looking for work!

We've been planning an ebook full of info like this for some time, in the mean time subscribe and check back regularly as we'll make them a regular feature in our blog uncovering FAQ like sourcing music, using it, entering festivals and so on; stay tuned!
