Garmin nüvi 755/755T 4.3 Inch Portable GPS Navigator with Free Traffic and Maps of US, Canada & Puerto Rico Reviews
By Todd Peterson (kansas city mo) Love the new lane assist. Very handy at times. It is smart enough to zoom in and out depending on your speed and destination. Very dissapointed with the POP UP coupon ads. I get the same one over and over 'Best Western 1500 Points'. Very annoying and no literature how to turn it off. At least allow the unit to target ads based on your destination. I get them at startup and at random. To get them off I click the menu button and back to MAP when they pop up. Some things appear on the unit and there is no literature about it. For example, Traffic Map, I assume this is going to tell me where traffic is heavy or lighter. I get black lines. Map is the same in heavy and light traffic even with FM Traffic updates turned on. Here's a plus. I can choose a beach ball to drive around in onscreen. Fun to watch it roll down the road as I drive, very soothing. Noticed when you buy from Amazon the unit might not have the latest maps. I was looking forward to getting this new unit so my maps would be updated. Year old business and roads are not appearing as expected. Maybe Garmin will toss in a free map update for me. In addition the LOCK feature is hit and miss. I set this on this new unit because my other one was stolen. About 1-4 times it will boot up without entering my unlock code. If stolen again, the theif might be able to tolerate this. ![]() By yorkiemomof8 (NYS) Am very satisfied with the Garmin GPS. It took some adjusting because of the difference from my prior Garmin model and the documentation was not as user friendly as it could be. ![]() By Loren C. Owensby (Victoria, TX) Having enjoyed a Nuvi 350 for the past three years I was looking forward to having the additional features and wide screen of the Nuvi 755T. I carefully compared models of Garmin and compared to TomTom, which seems to enjoy more popularity in UK and Europe. When it works, I like the Garmin. The first 755T I got from Amazon worked OK but the battery would hold a full charge for only 30 min no matter how I had charged it--USB to PC cable, 12v auto cable, AC charger(purchased extra)--even after a 24 hr charge. I fought with Garmin Customer Svc through multiple E-mails and phone calls only to be offered to return it to them for refurbishing. And at my own cost for shipping! I had bought a new unit and expected a new unit immediately in return. When I returned it to Amazon (very smoothly and easily) I received in two days a brand new unit. That's service! The new unit, however, gets only 1.5 hrs out of a full charge, despite Garmin's saying it should get 8 hrs. If you always use it with the 12v cable, no problem. Features: It is easy to set up and program in your favorite destinations, home, trips, etc. Nearby POI are also easy to find and use. The screen is bright and easy to read even in bright sunlight. The British Daniel voice command is the easiest for me to understand. American Jack is too 'computer tinny.' The Lane Assist feature is nice but not really helpful to me. The Junction View (3D photo representation of major freeway intersections) is distracting and not helpful. It came with a one time map upgrade for free, but it required it immediately since the map data it came with was already one year out of date. That took three hours of download time with a DSL connection. The external antenna (necessary to purchase extra) is required in my wife's Toyota Highlander Hybrid to avoid Loss of Satellite Signal. I assume that the electromagnetic field generated by the hybrid drive causes that? The manual does not come with the unit. One must download it, and it is easy to use, read and understand. Some of the features I do not plan to use--MSN Direct, MP3 player, FM transmitter to vehicle speakers. The map software is far out of date with respect to road changes that have been done for over five years now. I will probably try a TomTom next time. They cost a lot less for the features. ![]() By M. Schneck (Massapequa, New York USA) The pros it recalculate fast, it get you there. My favourite part is lane changer. Also it has a lot of opinions which I like. Is cons software is slow, it take forever to search for area, Like the stores. It hard to put together. I got traffic accessory, make it go on and off the GPS. Lane changer is only come up on major highways but not all merges. Garment should have more lain changes on the map. I would improve the lane stuff, So I know what lane to be in for a turn or merge. ![]() By J. Motter (Atlanta, GA) I was initially pleased with the Garmin Nuvi 755T for the first two months, but I had not really put the unit to the test. Last week, I went on a long road trip and was disappointed to learn that this units routing system makes many poor, even dangerous, decisions. This recent trip was one for which I already knew the very best route. Still, I like to use the unit just to track mileage. When I entered the starting point and destination, I was stunned to see the illogical route this rather obtuse unit selected for me. My trip was from Atlanta, GA to Fort Wayne, IN. The best route is to go from Atlanta on I-75 to Chattanooga, from there to Nashville on I-24, from Nashville to Indianapolis via Louisville on I-65, then finally on to Fort Wayne via I-69. This route is interstate the entire way. Instead of this preferred route, the Garmin unit sent me from Atlanta to Knoxville to Lexington to Cincinnati to Indianapolis and finally to Fort Wayne. Now, this route would not be so bad had it selected interstate highways the entire way, for it a reasonable alternative that is only a few miles longer. However, the route it chose included many roads that were NOT interstate highways. Not once, but twice this unit plotted a route that would have me exit the safe and fast interstate highways only to travel 40 to 50 miles on slow and unsafe two-lane non-divided highways. Each time it selected these inferior routes it did so because this 'shortcut' was a few miles shorter in distance. So, to summarize . . . first it selected the wrong overall route, then worse yet, it selected two-lane highways for long stretches. What's not to like about this? Well, everything! I purchased this unit for my daughter to drive across country to get to and from university. I would NEVER want a unit to put my daughter on two-lane highways when interstate options are available that are only a few miles longer in length. Other units, notably an old Magellan unit, allowed me to select 'Greatest Use of Freeways,' as a screen to force the unit to select routes comprised of major interstate highways only. But, this Garmin unit has NO such feature. It allows you to select 'Faster Route' and/or 'Shorter Distance,' but that logic is apparently far too limited. As a result, I am now stuck with a unit I simply do not trust to make the correct decisions. Oh, sure, it will get you to the desired destination, assuming you can avoid the dangers and pitfalls of two-lane highways meandering through small towns. Garmin tech support was helpful in updating my unit to the latest map, but the problem was not resolved. After that, all they could do was advise me that I can always override the route by selecting a detour. Good grief! That idea works fine, but only if you know exactly which route is the best in advance of the unit calculating some loopy and dangerous route. No help there, Garmin. What if you are not familiar with the best route? Shouldn't the GPS device perform that function for the user? I suggest readers look for GPS units that offer more sophisticated route selection and screening tools. In my opinion, this one looks quite nice on the windshield, but it falls rather short in practice, and I suspect this is true with the entire Garmin line.
