Fixing Your Credit Report Score
By Nathalie Fiset

Planning to get a loan? Have you examined your credit report yet? If you haven't then maybe you should make the effort to do so. After all, it won't really take you a lot of time. Getting your report will enable you to check it. This is because a lending company definitely uses this same report in order to determine your score. A low credit report score means denial of a loan.

How exactly do you fix this? Well, the most common reason for a low score is that your report may actually have some errors. Disputing those errors may be your best chance of increasing your score. First of all, you are going to need a copy of your report. You can get a report online instantly or you can just wait and get one for free. Either option has its advantages. If you have been recently turned down for a loan, then you could ask the institution that turned you down for a copy of your report.

When you finally have a copy of your credit report, you should examine it carefully for any errors. Since you will be dealing with history here, you might not be sure about a lot of things. Here's a rule of the thumb: if you doubt, check it out. Do not discount anything. Even if you only marginally doubt an item, take note of it.

After sorting out the errors, you have some more backtracking to do. You need to look back on those errors and contact people involved in the transactions. If you have paid a debt still listed on your report, contact the company you made the payment out to, if not the specific representative. Get some signed and certified statements from them. You should also remember to write down every detail.

When you have every proof, then you should go to the credit bureau that compiled your report. These are the people who provided material to calculate your credit report score and so these are the people who must correct it. There are two ways you will be received: embarrassed cooperation or defiant hostility. If you have enough proof, the former will be their reception to you. If not, then you ought to expect hostility.

Very few cases make it to the courts but you best prepare yourself for the possibility. Get a lawyer to help you convince the credit bureau that they should rectify the errors.

Of course, if there are no errors to rectify, you can be in a bit of a jam. You cannot contest accurate information affecting your credit report score. Here's what you have to do in order to improve it: wait it out. If you are searching for a way to fix your record, you might find not a few sites claiming to be able to help you. No matter what their promises are, however, you should realize that you cannot really erase any accurate information from your record.

How much time will you have to wait? Well, it depends. It would be advisable for you to let at least 6months pass after a loan denial to apply again. In the meanwhile, you should try to build up a better credit history as this will surely improve your credit report score.

Another option for you to consider would be getting a higher-paying job or at least a secondary one. There's always room for improvement of income, right?

Why wait for six months? Well, if you have been turned down for a loan, that information will also be recorded on your report. Attempt to apply to too many loan companies and they will be suspicious of your intent, which will further contribute to the denial of your loan.

You might have seen one site or another claiming to be able to fix your credit report instantly. This scheme is a trap. Why? It's because credit bureaus are required by law to include negative information in your credit report for at least seven years. If you have suffered a bankruptcy, that will appear in your record for ten years.

That is why it is always better to build up a good credit report score right form the beginning than to try fixing a bad one.
