Nursing Equipment: Having The Right Tools
Once you become a nurse, a completely new way of life opens up for you. Precisely what you do depends, of course, on your particular field of nursing and your professional assignment. Nurses who are just starting out need to be ready with basic healthcare equipment. The specific hospital or group for which one is working may have specific needs as well, but in general the requirements for nurses are more or less the same. Apart from the different tools that may vary from one department to another, the basic nursing equipment remains the same and includes a combination of uniforms, shoes, watch, gait belts and bandage scissors to name a few. Other essential equipment includes pens, stethoscopes and other relevant tools required according to the departmental needs. One of the most important pieces of nursing equipment is a good stethoscope. Every nurse is expected to carry one for performing various patient examinations and evaluating various patient conditions. A standard one that can be used upon adults, children, and infants would be ideal. Tops, trousers, jackets, caps, etc make up nursing scrubs (the uniform). These outfits show a professional appearance for the staff and help to distinguish the nursing staff in their different departments and practices. These uniforms also help to maintain a vital hygienic environment and to assist in preventing the spread of germs. A nurse's shoes are vital; they need to be comfortable and easily cleaned. Nurses are on their feet all day and having comfortable shoes are a must. Other equipment that may be need are; a water-proof watch with a second hand, that is large enough to read, to help with checking a pulse and a gait belt which is used to transfer patients from a bed to wheelchair or to assist with walking. To keep a pen handy for making notes on patient charts a nurse may find it convenient to keep a pen on a lanyard hanging around the neck. Nurses often need access to a medical dictionary or other references, scissors, or a calculator and will carry these in a pocket. After the stethoscope the most often used instrument is the sphygmomanometer which is used to measure patient blood pressure. But you can always be prepared with a nursing kit, which typically contains standard medical equipment such as stethoscopes, blood pressure cuff, scissors, penlights, kelly clamps, measuring tape, and an ID badge holder. All the equipment contained in the kit is for the diagnosis or treatment of certain medical issues or conditions. Of course, high standards are maintained so that the integrity of these instruments is top-notch. Nursing is the protection, promotion, and optimization of health and abilities; prevention of illness and injury; alleviation of suffering through the diagnosis and treatment of human responses; and advocacy in health care for individuals, families, communities, and populations.
