Understanding your skin type Understanding your skin type by Sandy Richards

No two skins are the same. Cosmetologists say most skins can be grouped into several types: oily, dry, normal/combination, sensitive, blemished and mature skin.
Before you start on a beauty regime you need to understand your skin type. You do not have to visit a beauty clinic since you can perform tissue tests to tell your skin type.
A tissue test is one of the best ways to tell whether your skin is oily or dry. The best time to do this is first thing in the morning on skin that has been thoroughly cleansed the night before.
Take a two-ply tissue and put one layer on your cheeks and the other down the center of your face, over the forehead, nose and chin. DO not rub it. Just press the tissue for one or two minutes onto the skin, then hold it up in the light to examine the result.

Dry Skin
If the tissue shows any transparent marks, you have a dry skin. Use mild cleansers and plenty of moisturizer. You are lucky to have this skin but you must look after it carefully and protect it against the drying effects of central heating and too much sun.

Oily Skin
You have oily skin if the tissue shows transparent oily marks and your skin is shiny. Cheeks are normally drier that the centre panel of your face. Another sign is coarse pored skin like orange peel. Oily skin secretes too much sebum, so you must pay great attention to cleansing. If you use soap and water go for mild soap or cosmetic wash cream cleansers with a complexion brush. This will ensure deep pore cleansing to prevent black heads.

Combination skin
If on your cheeks there is no trace of oil but the tissue shows oil traces from the middle part of your face, it means your skin is half and half. This is normal and is what is called combination skin. All it means is that you have to treat both parts separately. The problem is finding a way to treat the oily area effectively without disturbing the balance of the dry skin areas. Consult a professional if you have difficulty analyzing your skin type.

Oily to combination
This skin type is characterized by good circulation, firm tissue and fine pores. It has a tendency to cause early dryness on the cheeks

Sensitive Skin
This is a delicate skin that flushes readily. It also reacts quickly to outside influence.

Mature skin
This type has been influenced by age and environment, It therefore needs extra care. It is characterized by visible wrinkles and slackening tissue, and is poorly moisturized.

Blemish Skin
This skin type is characterized by pimples and blackheads.
If you have problematic skin you should have an analysis done by a cosmetologist, who will recommend the right beauty regime.
