KATHMANDU, Aug 28 - The formal announcement of Nepali Congress and Nepali Congress-Democratic unification is coming only after few days despite the completion of all necessary homework for the merger.

NC President, Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala had presented the unification package Monday evening on which NC-D President, former PM Sher Bahadur Deuba had asked for two days' to think over it, sources said.

The duo had, nonetheless, reached an agreement to unify the party ahead of the CA elections during a meeting held at the PM’s official residence at Baluwatar Sunday evening.

After a vertical split lasting almost five years, the Nepali Congress and breakaway Nepali Congress (Democratic) Monday finally agreed to unify under tremendous pressure from party rank and file for unification well before the upcoming the CA polls scheduled for November 22.

The unification announcement was expected to come this Wednesday, however, due to the Gai Jatra festival on the same day, it has been postponed for yet another day, sources said.

Now, the formal announcement of the merger is likely to come on Thursday only.

It has been agreed that PM Koirala would remain the president of the party while Krishna Prasad Bhattarai would hold senior most position after Koirala followed by Deuba.

In the unified party, Vice-President, Sushil Koirala would hold the position of acting president, the sources added.

The NC-D has proposed that it should get the position of the vice-president and the general secretary.

However, the NC asked the NC-D not to insist on the proposal, as the hierarchy has to be meticulously on the basis of seniority of the leaders.

The mother party has proposed to merger central committee of the two parties to form a single working committee.

The PM also suggested Deuba that two separate committees should be formed at the earliest to take major decisions regarding the CA polls and for the electoral campaign, sources said.

The party district level working committee leadership would be appointed on the seniority basis within the party and assessing their contribution to the April Uprising.

If there is any dispute over seniority in any district, the center would initiate the process to resolve it, the sources added.

NC-D President Deuba is expected to take final decision over the unresolved issues within the next two days.

A meeting of central committee of the NC will take place at 8 am Thursday to discuss the unification drive and to conduct homework for the elections.
