Tab is the easiest type of music to read but is a bas choice to use if your playing with pianists or horn players you music know how to communicate with them. Learning notation is the best way to play music if your playing with instruments other than guitars and drums.

The two types of clefs of notation are the treble and bass clefs. The different clefs tell us what notes the black dots will stand for. If we are playing in the treble clef a note on the bottom line of the clef will be high pitched than a note on the bottom line in bass clef. Think of treble clef as the right hand of the piano and bass clef as the left hand of the piano.

Notes tell us two things, what pitch to play and how long to play it. The length of the note is called the rhythm. Lets assume that we are in 4/4 time and there are four quarter notes per measure. Let compare a few notes to each other.

Whole note ? A whole note gets 4 beats and will take up a whole measure. If you're tapping your toe, play a note and let it ring until your foot has tapped four times. One, two, three, four.

Half note ? A half note is half as long as a whole note, and lasts half a measure. Tap your toe only two times for this one. One, two?

Quarter note ? The note that is third from the left is a quarter note. Quarter notes get one beat and only take up a quarter of a measure, so only one tap for this one.
The next notes are shorter than a beat. This means you will have to learn how to count differently. To count eighth and sixteen notes we count like this... one ? ee ? and ? uh ? two ? ee ? and ? uh.

Eighth note ? Most notes like the eighth note can be written right side up or upside down, just make sure you notice how many flags are on the stem of the note. Eighth notes get half of a beat and there are a total of eight in a whole measure. Eighth notes are half of a quarter note.

Rests

Rests take on the same length as their corresponding notes but instead of playing a pitch you play nothing. If you have a full measure of rests then you wouldn't play anything for that whole measure. Eight rests are of equal length to the eighth note, but you wouldn't play anthing during a rest.

This only covers how long to play the notes, the other part of music is learning what pitches to play when the notes are on certain lines.
