About a Lack of Green

After enduring the boredom of tedious classes and the torture of "standardized testing" and looking forward to starting a career American teenagers in 2009 are finding that even the largest employers of young Americans, McDonald's and Jack In the Box aren't hiring. Hundreds of thousands of California's teens are unable to find a job.

The US Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that the "National Unemployment Rate" is 9.4% and the teenage jobless rate is 23.6 % in May.

Retailers and restaurant operators have cut their staffing hours and current employees have been keeping their present jobs as their chances of finding another one are nonexistent, greatly lowering the "employee turnover" that creates opportunity for less experienced workers.

The rough shape the economy is in has forced unemployed adults to seek the very jobs that their teenage children need to get started in life. With more experience, the adults have a definite edge on their younger competitors.

When faced with that decision prospective employers are thinking "This person has five kids to support, I should hire her, instead of a teenager who lacks experience."
