The external drives have their own case outside the computer system and the enclosure case is portable although a bit larger than the drive that it holds.

The external drive is linked to the computer system through a high speed interface cable; USB and fire wire are the most commonly used interface cables. This cable is used for passing and receiving data from the external hard drive to the computer system. The 1tb external drive can also be used as a plug-and-play device. A Firewire or USB compatible computer may recognize the external hard drive as a storage medium by giving it a drive name or letter. The user may then access the contents of the external drive like the internal drive.
