How to Find and Win a Scholarship How to Find and Win a Scholarship by Daniel Kane

Maybe you're not the potential All-American college coaches dream about.

Maybe your grades do not reflect your real academic potential.

And, maybe you have not held leadership positions in school clubs and activities.

So, it looks like there'll be no scholarships in your future, right?

Don't jump to conclusions. The truth is, you may be a pretty good or even very good prospect for scholarships. But, you'll have to do some investigating and (simple) research.

First, go to your guidance counselor. Chances are, he or she will have information on dozens of scholarships (or more) offered by businesses and organizations in and near your hometown, and how to apply for them.

After that, put together a listing of businesses and organizations with which you or a member of your family are affiliated. Where do you and they work? What house of worship do they attend? What clubs or organizations do they participate in? With any luck at all, you will find that these businesses and organizations offer scholarships, some of which are based on affiliation, not academic achievement.

Then go on the net and try a few of the many free scholarship searches.

The more you look, the more you'll find not just standard scholarships for academic achievement, but also scholarships for students affiliated with particular groups, students whose family members work for a particular company, students who wish to enter specific professions, and scholarships in dozens of other categories.

There are even scholarships you can win by writing an essay or participating in an academic competition.

There is no shortage of scholarship money out there for ambitious students of all ages. But, you have to spend some time and energy finding them, you must fill out your scholarship applications carefully, and you must be aware of and adhere to deadlines.

Good luck!
