Nepal celebrated the 28th World Tourism Day Thursday with various programmes across the country.

Madhav Prasad Ghimire, Secretary, Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Aviation welcomed the first tourist of the day, Kenyan national Githiora Titus Kamau, coming from Qatar Airways flight from Doha at Tribhuvan International Airport at 6:45 am.

Minister for Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation Prithvi Subba Gurung honoured different personalities and companies which contributed substantially in tourism.

According to the Nepal Tourism Board (NTB), in the hotel category, highest foreign currency earning hotels, Radisson Hotel, Hotel Himalaya, Hotel Summit, Hotel Tibet and Hotel Garuda in five, four, three, two and one star category respectively were honoured. Yeti Travels was honoured for both highest currency earner and the company which handled most number of tourists. In the trekking agency category, Himalaya Expeditions was felicitated for being the highest foreign currency earning.

Shangri-La Village Resort was the best tourism enterprise from Pokhara and Tiger Tops Jungle Lodge from Chitwan. Nepal Airlines has been given the certificate for highest passenger carrier for both international and domestic sector while Yeti Airlines was the highest foreign currency earner in the domestic airlines category.

Minister Gurung also honoured Pasang Sherpa of Everest Region for his continuous service rendered to the region by maintaining the trekking trail. Additionally Minister Gurung also distributed the prizes and certificates to the students who won 8th Nationwide Essay Competition organised on the occasion of World Tourism Day.

A cycle rally was also organised by Nepal Cycling Club from the NTB premises to commemorate the World Tourism Day. Altogether 70 people including two foreigners and four women participated in the rally.
