There is a valid reason why the American Quarterhorse occasionally is referred to as "the world's fastest athlete". The Quarterhorse got its name because of its incredible speed over short distances, making it being able to beat almost every other breed of horse over a quarter mile track. The American Quarterhorse that we know today began to emerge in the 1600s, as a result of early settlers cross-breeding thoroughbred horses, imported from England, with the wild horses native to what would soon become America. Though the term "native" is actually erroneous as the horses in question were actually Chickasaw, a breed brought over from Spain by the Conquistadors. These "native" horses were actually developed from Iberian, Arabian and Barb stock!

Pioneers that established the American West during the 1800s needed a strong horse that was willing to work. The bill was filled by the American Quarterhorse. During the old west settlement era, domestic Quarterhorses and mustangs were bred together by the indians. The result was a horse that was born with "cow sense" � a natural instinct for working cattle.
