'Hi this is Mathilde from the British International School Phuket. I'm here at Jungceylon attending the Phuket Bike Week 2008, and here today are lots of different bikes....'
Bike week started in 1995, when a group of about 300 local big-bike fans got together for the first time and decided to make this an annual event, bringing all bike lovers together. Each year the group grew and grew, so it has grown from 150 bikes in that first year to thousands now. The bikers drive here from all around Thailand but also Malaysia, Singapore and some ship in bikes from as far away as the US.
During Bike week, participants hold fun activities to raise funds for local charities or schools. This year Phuket Bike Week ran from April 10th until the 12th, starting with an exhibition of gleaming new beautiful bikes displayed in Jungceylon, Patong.
Alexandra our news presenter, and me, got to see an amazing collection of Harleys, Hondas, and superbikes...
We spoke to some of the participants at the exhibition in Jungceylon.
There was also a staged dance performance
to mark the official opening, and several VIPs including senior police & Patong Municipality officials and famous singers speaking on stage: and pretty ladies to attract more viewers.
Later there was an island bike cruise with thousands in a convoy from Patong to Cape Promthep and back to ThaiNaan restaurant in Phuket city and then a grand dinner in the restaurant; and also tree planting to help prevent global warming, plus a motorcross stunt show at Patong Gokart, among several other events over the busy weekend.
