Robert Campbell's ASYLUM 11, a: theatrical one-man show / movie / comic book / concert, is previewed in this promo trailer. The show has performed at the Philadelphia Fringe Festival, Gretna Theatre's 'Monday Night Series,' at Gamut Theatre Group as a 'Core Company Spotlight' Production (the first such production at this company) and in an educational theatre residency experience at Cornell College in Mount Vernon, Iowa. The show was workshopped at Penn State's Outlaws Playwright's Workshop and State College, PA's Boal Barn Playhouse. It was developed as Campbell's Honors Thesis in Theatre. The show was a collaborative effort between Robert Campbell (Writer, Director, Editor, Designer, Producer, Actor), PSU Communications professor T. Martin Camden III (Cinematographer, Co-Editor, Story Consultation, Video Technician... 'Marty' to his friends), and Marty's wife Kelly (Producer, Story Consultation, Actor). It first appeared in workshop form in 2002 and had its professional debut (Philly Fringe) in 2003. In each subsequent performance, Campbell has revised, reshot, re-staged and re-edited in a (probably neverending) cycle of 'tweaking' the show's theatrical effectiveness. While Campbell tries to incorporate a contemporary entertainment sensibility to the experience, the narrative is dense and the show is best experienced by media-saturated culture obsessives. The merit of the show is most strongly felt in the world of academia, where it is a unique experience for undergraduate and graduate majors in Theatre (Artistic and Technical), Film, TV, Art, and the liberal arts / contemporary culture crowd in general. Future plans include to (hopefully) take the show to The Edinburgh Fringe Festival in Scotland and The NYC International Fringe. One ideal audience for ASYLUM 11 would be Comic Book Conventions. Another would be as an indoor sideshow attraction at large-scale music festivals and arts festivals. The best hands-on experience for students in an ASYLUM 11 residency experience is for technical theatre students, who can design lights and sound with an 'on the fly' / jazz idiom technique which encourages them to be confident, on-the-spot designers, much like the time trial projects of design-oriented reality television. Other workshop experiences connected to the show include class lecture-demonstrations 'Creating Your Own Multimedia Monograph: A Short Handbook for Student Actors' and 'The Asylum Experience,' a point-by-point lecture on the creation of this unique theatrical piece.Campbell was for five years (2002-2007) a professional actor in regional theatres in his home area of Central Pennsylvania, playing roles like Mozart in AMADEUS, Hamlet, King Henry V, Kent in KING LEAR, and Frog in A YEAR WITH FROG AND TOAD. He has worked for the Illinois Shakespeare Festival, Gretna Theatre, the Fulton Opera House, Pennsylvania Centre Stage, Open Stage of Harrisburg, and Sight & Sound Theatres as an actor. His most recent full-time theatrical employment was a two-year contract at Gamut Theatre Group in Harrisburg, PA as actor, teacher and fundraiser for this up-and-coming company devoted to 'the classic story and the classic idea.' He has a BA in Theatre Arts from Penn State University's School of Theatre (2002, Schreyer Honors) and is currently in a one-year Master's of Ed. program getting his Secondary English certification. He hopes to teach theatre somewhere in the lovely Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and continue work towards furthering his education in theatre, film, communications and cultural studies. This fall he will play MacDuff in the premiere film from Sycamore Productions, an adaptation of William Shakespeare's MACBETH, directed by North Carolina School for the Arts film school alumnus Patrick Siler.Campbell's next work of multimedia theatre will be a one man show (including fan interviews, historical trivia and personal commentary) about being a lifelong fan of the City of Pittsburgh and its championship-laden professional football team, The Steelers.
