Another Karaoke. I hope you enjoy it. Self critique: I need to work on my pitch stability, particularly toward the trailing end of notes. I don't always land in the center and exit smoothly. There are also some awkward breaths. I think correct technique is to inhale through the nose, which I don't. [Multiple replies have corrected this assertion]. I also need to find a slightly crisper balance of enunciation. Too much enunciation sounds forced. But this is a little bit far in the other direction. About six pitches were digitally corrected by about half a semitone.***[Someone on Myspace wrote me a great letter about this and I thought I'd repost it with permission]I watched the 'Edelweiss' video. First of all, you did a lovely job and I personally enjoy that song very much. Here's a few things for you to try out:Your first sung word, 'Edelweiss'. Try singing 'Edelweiiiiii' and don't add the 's' just yet. Keep your mouth open, jaw relaxed, and let the sound flow out. This can also be done on many other words.Singing is so much different than speaking, especially in English because of all the dipthongs and tripthongs. Again, I'll use the name 'Edelweiss' as an example. The third syllable, weiss, has two vowel sounds 'ah' and 'i' (as in 'ski'). Always in singing you want to hold the first vowel longer, and add the second one at the very end.Like if you were to sing 'I'. You'd want to sing 'Ahhhi' instead of 'Ayiieeee'. Making sense?I noticed this also on the word 'Bright', so trying singing 'Brigh', again, keeping your mouth open so you don't close down and sing 'Brigheet'. (:Also, what you might want to try is bringing the sound more forward. What I mean by that is we don't want to it to sound like you're swallowing the sound, we want it to be nice and crisp, seeming to almost be coming out between your eyes. How we can try is by lifting your top lip while you sing. What it does is it has you focus on the area in front of your mouth instead of way in the back. It will look funny, but trust me, it helps. Try it in a mirror. You should be able to see your top teeth. It also helps me to make swirly gestures with my hands along musical phrases. One more thing I'll leave you with is the 'invisible glass of water.' What I want you to do is pretend you have a glass of water in your hand and 'drink' it. You should feel your soft palate lift. You may even yawn, it's normal. It's good to have that space there while you're singing. It helps with resonance and pitch.Hehe, I'm yawning thinking about it.Just try these few exercises out and let me know how it goes. (: I'd be glad to help you any time if you have any questions or want my input. One more thing, I just wanted to let you know that you have an amazing classical voice and great stage presence.
