I'm Kristin Volk with a UPI Headline Update.Virginia Republican Senator John Warner is calling on President Bush to start the process of bringing U.S. troops home from Iraq in September. The influential former chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee says a pullout is needed to spur Iraqi leaders to action. He's recommending that Bush announce a troop withdrawal in September and have soldiers home by Christmas. Warner is one of the most respected voices in the Senate on military and national security issues.Meanwhile, General Peter Pace may call for a cut in the number of troops serving in Iraq. Pace, who's leaving as chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, is expected to advise President Bush to slash troops in half next year. The Joint Chiefs reportedly fear that the Iraq effort has become so great a strain on the military that it cannot respond to other threats. But, General David Petreaus, the commander in Iraq, is expected to recommend in September that the additional troops sent to that country and remain there into next year.Chinese officials say they've launched a quote special war to improve the quality and supervision of their products. This comes as the country is under global pressure to beef up the security of its products. The campaign will last four months and target categories like processed food, drugs, and agricultural products. At the end, officials hope to have mandatory licensing of all food producers, monitoring and inspection of all raw materials used in export products.More than 300 thousand Chicago area residents are without power after violent storms wreaked havoc on the Midwest yesterday. Sudden flooding pushed rivers and streams out of their banks, causing Interstate highways to close. Tornado threats caused the city's O'Hare and Midway airports to shut down for two hours yesterday.
